Id never been before but aftwr a few days there I have to wonder.
Foods better by far and much cheaper.
The French bakeries everywhere are hard to beat. The coffees served are better than any I've tried in Australia.
Accommodation is cheaper.
Lovely place and a bit of a let down to cross back over the river honestly.
Maybe not as hyped as bkk is but in its own way a very enjoyable place.
So what makes Thailand better exactly?

Overland public transport. My knees are still recovering from a bus ride from Vientiane to Vong Vieng. (Spellcheck?)

Forgot the smokers out there.
Better quality cigarettes for half the Thai price. I'm thinking Thailand gets ripped off with low grade tobacco and charges smokers top baht for their habit.
Laos beer is also better than all the Thai made beers. Thailand could learn a thing or 2 from their neighbors on that one.

Laos stuff must be almost free.

Pizza and beer on the river at sunset followed by pancakes and coffee on the river at sunrise. To die for..

Not that you are interested, but you could once sit back on your balcony watching topless European lasses float past on rubber tubes. Or join them.

Good to see that you keep ''abreast'' of the local tourist scene and inform us accordingly.

I really like Laos! Great food as already stated- seems to be less oily and far fresher.

I liked it too, reminded me of thailand 40 years ago. Though it has lost the French influence in the food I think. If I was comming here now I think that is where I would have gone to live.

Is Laos better than Thailand? Never been in Pathet Lao or whatever it's called now and I'm not sure I should ask my Thai colleagues for an objective answer

I found crossing the border a bit intense. That Thai side I was met with scorn. Flicked my passport at me not even a head nod.
The Laos side I was met with a smile and a korp jai as my passport was handed back.

From what i read in a letter the editor in the BKK post one time, not better for medical treatment...a geriatric falang who lived in Laos was whining about not being preferetianal visa treatment at the border because he was getting treatment in Thailand
