British journalist arrested in Thailand for carrying body armor CNN)A British journalist is facing up to five years in prison in Thailand after being found in possession of body armor and other protective gear. Tony Cheng, a freelance correspondent for Chinese state broadcaster CGTN, told CNN he was charged Monday night with possessing "war weapons" after being stopped with German colleague Florian Witulski at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. The pair were en route to the war-torn Iraqi city of Mosul, where they have reported from in the past. A large-scale military operation is ongoing in Mosul, where Iraqi government forces are attempting to wrest control of the city from ISIS. Cheng had a gas mask and body armor in his check-in luggage. Both items are classified as restricted military equipment under Thailand's 1987 Arms Control Act. edition.cnn.com/2017/05/30/asia/thailand-uk-journalist-arrested/index.html

I don't know how the authorities would react if you took the goods through the something to declare channel? To me, that's the point of that channel, but having no experience of it, I'm not sure.

The thing is these days with the interweb its pretty easy to find out if something is illegal in a country or not before travelling if carrying something "unconventional" given this is a journo who would be used to researching things, it should a have been a straight forward check prior to travelling One could argue this kit is not illegal in the UK given he is British, but very sure you go marching through Gatwick or Heathrow with a flack jacket, trauma plates and gas mask in your carry on, HM's rozzers will want a quiet word with you as to your intentions
