Recreational drugs market should be managed by 'governments not gangsters', says expert Exclusive: Steve Rolles argues the war on drugs has been a ‘spectacular failure’ and has led to ‘the most rapid expansion of drug use in human history’. His solution? Licensed high street venues... Over the 50-odd years the global war on drugs has been fought, it’s been a catalogue of failure on pretty much every level you’d care to examine – bar the bank balance of those profiting from the outcome. There may yet be another half century of futility and broken promises ahead of us, but one man has a vision of what a post-drug-war world could look like. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/recreational-drugs-government-gangsters-war-decriminalise-legalise-transform-reform-experts-a7763546.html

Problem is the governments of the world are bigger gangsters than the gangsters themselves, lest not forget at one point in time the British Government had the biggest drug dealing operation on the planet which is yet to be supassed in size

The Netherlands started to be against after loosing income out of cocaine/opium trade with the independence of Indonesia. High moral standards and so, directly linked to the wallet Of course, the legalised drugs trade (mostly softdrugs in 'coffee shops') is taxed

If you treat people like children don't be surprised when they set fire to your house and kill the goldfish.

Got to say though, Steve Rolles has just entered my hero list. We should have a sub forum made and named in his honour.

Will Labour do a California then?
The US led the ridiculous war on drugs...will the UK now wake up and decriminalise cannibis fully and allow the coffeeshop culture to flourish?

It is difficult. Do you have laws or not? Fake laws perhaps. Do some need protection or should all be regarded as equal in competence to decide for themselves?
With drugs, the rich can afford them and avoid the law. Hey, i live in thailand.
Alcohol is legal in some countries, marijuana in others.
When you have vast societies then the normal controls break down. A tribal village does not face these problems. It is how you determine the best outcome for all. Ouch , that wreaks of utilitarianism.
Reduced religious control, yes control and move to a free society, there lies the problem. I as you must be aware am a libertine, but know what that means. Freedom has a price. The circle continues.

Or ordering three pizzas and realising it should have been four.

To be honest the greatest risk is trying to type a full answer to a post when in realit........................................................

Steve Dulles?
Smokie was at an Independent sponsored legalise cannabis rally in Trafalgar Square during the Major era I think it was.
Helicopters overhead and riot police in view as we all danced and smoked for three hours in the middle of the square laughing and inviting all around us to have fun.
Quite surreal actually.
