Yes, my late grandfather was on one before being moved on to an old folks home. It was spartan and pretty impersonal but hardly 'grim'. Old folks home was nice, it was for the RAF so he was in good company. Emotionally I would find a terminal children's ward tough, good one of RGS for making their day a little brighter.
