And here's the news, brought to you by Google translate:
"In business news today, the SET eats rosary beads in the sky from Russia, a fall of more than 2% in the eye because Australia. Meanwhile President Putin left for your mothers armpits on ice where he'll meet with fourteen yodeling cows inoculated".

Then why is there many English signs around, as in most road signs in Thailand have Thai / English on them ? Came in quite handy years ago when I was going to school learning the lingo. But I think cm was right, it would probably be better left alone otherwise it would be too confusing. "Tonight's news was brought to you by the Nana Condom Company, the people who love seeing their product in your mouth !"

They actually do a good job with the Thai - English translation on the road signs.
Except if you cannot read Thai you get the wrong idea of the sounding of the word in Thai due to the Royal Thai General System of Transcription.
When heading north from Chiang Rai to the Myanmar you often hear people refer to "May Sai".
Had a mate from England in CR who had a very broad accent and when he was referring to that town it sounded like he was saying "Marseilles" and he wondered why the bloody Thais could not understand him !

Do they charge farangs a tax to read those signs or is it factored into their airfare, like the old 500 baht departure tax was ?

Correct, not just the signs, but the size of them, not just engerlish. The tax pay to the local khet is peanuts anyway for the signage.

They have these new fangled devises, called dual language tvs, you can listen to the thai news in english, select language setting and you are off to the races.

The tax pay to the local khet is peanuts anyway for the signage. Sign taxes come in three levels, if the advertisement is in Thai it costs 3 baht per 500 square centimetres in tax per year, add a foreign language and you are now paying 20 baht per year and if you have foreign language only, or the Thai text is so small it is negligible, then you will be taxed 40 baht for the same space 800baht for a meter square sign.
this is in Chiangmai
