Tintagel excavations reveal refined tastes of medieval settlers English Heritage says people who lived on site of Cornish castle 1,000 years ago dined on oysters and imported fine tableware Early Cornish kings feasted on a diet of oysters, roast pork and fine wine, eating and drinking from bowls imported from Turkey and glass goblets from Spain, a new dig at Tintagel Castle has suggested. Discoveries made by the Cornwall archaeological unit (CAU) support the view that Tintagel was a royal site during the 5th and 6th centuries, with trading links reaching as far as the eastern Mediterranean. Perched on Cornwall’s rugged north coast, Tintagel has for centuries been associated with the legend of King Arthur. Over the past 18 months, its custodian, English Heritage, has been accused of putting too much emphasis on the stories of Arthur and Merlin, rather than focusing on the site’s true, ancient Cornish heritage. The excavations, the first at Tintagel for decades, may help redress the balance. The excavation also uncovered stone-walled structures on the southern terrace of Tintagel’s island area, with substantial stone walls and slate floors, accessed by a flight of slate steps. Significant finds include a section of a fine Phocaean red slipware bowl from Turkey, imported amphorae thought to be from southern Turkey or Cyprus, and fine glassware from Spain. Cow, sheep and goat bones showing signs of butchering and cooking were unearthed, plus a cod bone – possible evidence of deep-sea fishing being carried out from Tintagel. www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jul/13/tintagel-excavations-reveal-refined-tastes-of-medieval-settlers

Another article about the same. The first picture reminds me of a time long ago I also did my bit of amateur Archaeology in the Netherlands King Arthur and his knights may – or may not – have lived at Tintagel. But archaeologists have uncovered evidence that whoever occupied the legendary castle on the North Cornwall coast did live like a king. Excavations have revealed that the inhabitants feasted on a diet of oysters, roast pork and fine wine, dining and drinking from bowls imported from Turkey and glass goblets from Spain. As archaeologists returned to Tintagel to continue their investigations today, English Heritage revealed the finds uncovered in last year’s dig by the Cornwall Archaeological Unit Read more at www.plymouthherald.co.uk/archaeologists-unearth-royal-secrets-of-tintagel-castle-s-king/story-30440220-detail/story.html#5V3KbP3MIbYf4SWu.99

You're right, King Arthur seems an amalgamation of various historical characters from a six hundred year period. With a bit of exaggeration and nationalism thrown in. Geoffrey of Monmouth really started it, he even had Trojan refugees as the founding fathers of British Kings

Geoffrey of Monmouth really started it, he even had Trojan refugees as the founding fathers of British Kings What is interesting is the theory that the sword in the stone really existed but it was a folk memory of early blacksmiths/metal workers casting sword blades in stone molds, hence literally what was written is 100% correct.there were swords in stones I also ready somewhere of a connection between sword makers and the lady of the lake in that they would heat treat, quench and temper a sword in water, so the classic image of a sword coming out of water could be a reference to the quench and temper of the blade and given when the blade went into the water it was soft and when it came out the blade had hardened, they attributed this to the mystical powers of the water

I nearly crashed my Cessna when I read that post of yours ! That myth was busted a long time ago, surprised it still being mentioned. Even Snopes got fed up with hearing it and did a debunk on it - (cue ~ some numbskull who thinks Snopes is "out to get him" makes a comment deriding them) The Claus That Refreshes

There's only one Sinterklaas and he has lots of Zwarte Pieten (black peters). Furthermore if you don't stop this nonsense Sinterklaas will write you down with a big black mark in his book and worst case Zwarte Piet will put you in his bag and they'll take you to Spain. Mind you, when I was young a holiday to Spain was only for richer people. I must admit that at times I was really tempted

Yes, they're trying, limited success. We already had manifestations with Piets in rainbow colours. THat is each Piet another colour and even a totally white and a totally black one for good fun measure. Children seem to get really confused if there's no Black Peter. We may still win this case
