I've a mate visiting Chiang Mai around Xmas time with his family. Wife and 2 young kids. Kids ages are around 6 - 10 ish if I remember rightly. He's not a cheap Charlie, and has been in Asia for a couple of decades, currently based in HK. So he's likely looking a decent family places good quality and VFM He asked me for any suggestions on villas or hotels. I haven't been there for a while so nothing much springs to mind. So any suggestions? Cheers Fletch

Doi inthanon and the Kings gardens, if they're into that kind of thing. The kids might be bored shitless.

I haven't been that way for about 3 years but we did enjoy the gardens we visited out of town.

What I really remember of being that age on holiday is wanting other kids to play with....is there not a water park or similar in CM?

Dinner at Micks surely. Perhaps a day trip out to visit Kuun Saa. Enjoy a day helping in the cooking process of his heroin empire.

I second SP's recommendations but for the price of the Shangri la I'd consider the following: If he wants a really nice hotel (villa or room) in the Mai Sa valley, about 30 minutes North of Chiang Mai and easily accessible, Panmivan is the place to stay, very nice and brilliant scenery and pools etc, great for kids also: www.panvimanresortchiangmai.com/In the same area but closer to Chiang Mai is the Sukantara Hotel which was recently voted one of the top ten hotels ON a waterfall worldwide: www.sukantara.com/en/Prices on the above likely to be much lower than their web sites state since it's low season here currently. Meridien downtown is a good location for the centre. Anantara is also in the centre but more up market than the Meridien plus it's on the river. chiang-mai.anantara.com/

Hard to advise people of things like this, the sort of hotel or villa that I like may not be to his liking. He is lucky as CM has so many places to choose from he is bound to find something that suits him. A lot depends on whether he wants to be in the city or not as well. Hope he hits the jackpot. They are welcome to come to my place, will be a distraction for my 3yo and give me a bit of peace.

Most of the tourist attractions in Chiang Mai are North of the city, in the Mae Sa valley, the elephant camp, the orchid farm, poopoopark, national park/waterfalls, off roading etc., it's also where the best scenery is unless you want to hike it out to Inthanon. At Xmas/New Year that road is heaving from dawn to dusk, all with visitors going to see the sites, that same road also leads to Montiem (sp) which is where all the out of town Thai's like to camp over the Xmas hols, it's great scenery up there, far far better than Suthep or Doi Pui.

^^how was poopoo park?
It was siht!
Theres a massage shop where if you mention the secret word which is blether , you get 60% off.
But for the full Thai experience, I highly suggest a night a buhis. They'll never forget it.
