I'd estimate that well more than half the city of Yangon is walking around wearing those surgical masks at the moment. We've had a small outbreak of H1N1, AKA Swine Flu, here in Myanmar and people are freaking out. I've even got students in my classes wearing them, which doesn't do a lot to help their pronunciation.
It's disconcerting to see everyone wearing these masks when you're not. Last night, I had a runny nose, a headache and body aches. My temperature was 99.5 (37.4). I looked up H1N1 symptoms online, and there they were (along with cough, sore throat and sneezing, none of which I was experiencing).
After a good night's sleep, I feel fine.
How about you? Concerned about Swine Flu? I also read last night that Thailand has had more H1N1 related deaths in 2017 than has Myanmar.

Yeah, same in Mandalay-over half of folks wearing masks. Will see on Monday if the kiddos are sporting fetching Hello Kitty and Ben 10 surgical masks. There seems to be a lot of misinformation here- given how dire the medical care in in Myanmar I'm not surprised. That said, we now have a clinic which is affiliated with Singapore Parkway-prices are a little steep but the care is great according to the few expats that have used it so far.
More worried about dengue or severe food poisoning

I survived SARS in HK , folks were getting on the bus going to work wearing rubber kitchen gloves and were wrapping themselves up in clingfilm , swimming goggles ffs. Terrified, twitchy commuters all checking each other out for runny noses and panicking when someone coughed on the bus.

Swine flu can be deadly to certain members of the population so their fears may be well founded in some cases
I have witnessed first hand in the last two weeks how quickly a young child can go down hill with a viral infection in his chest, and it wasnt anything as agressive as things like Swine flu or Bird flu, if he had been left another day or so it would have been ICU according to the doctor, in the end it was 7 days in hospital

The popularity of full face masks, even on overcast days, is also disturbing.

Ah yes surgical masks, while helmetless on motorbikes. Entirely logical.

A chav style burberry scarf would stop more particles than one of them cheap masks.
In the early 90's they cost about £90, that was before chavs existed
