Srsly. Is it out of arrogance or ignorance? Is it because she's Russian? Maybe she's got really ugly feet. I don't know, but this sort of shit makes all foreigners look bad. A tourist who was arrested for wearing shoes inside several Bagan pagodas has been sentenced to a month in jail.
Authorities say that the tourist, a Russian national, was given multiple warnings to take off her shoes but refused to comply. Full story

About 5 years ago, we took our rubber tappers son with us on our monthly trip to pay bills etc. We ended up at Tesco Lotus. As we left there was a pair of flip flops, that looked familiar. I looked round, and he's bare footed. .

Visiting Burmese temples isn't fun. Not only do you have to take your shoes off, you also have to take off your socks. Sometimes you're walking barefoot over sharp gravel. Sometimes you're walking on searingly hot tiles. It really can be most trying. And it's not like Thailand, where you only take your shoes off to enter an individual building: in Burma you have to take your footwear off at the outer boundary of the temple.

I can understand her wanting to keep her shoes on, for many reasons, however afterr having been specificly told she must remove them to enterit becomes her choice of entering and taking the consequences or not entering. If someone puts unreasonable conditions on entering a private place I do not enter even if the owner wants me to.

How can you understand? What possible excuse is there? How are shoes on your feet so sacrosanct that you defile religious traditions?

Maybe she had everyone elses interest at heart and didn't want them to catch her verrucas and fungal foot infection.
Now the poor women in her cell sentenced for stealing a Durian will contract the infection instead.
They'll also see the big hairy penis she has tattood on her foot aswell.

Possibly when traditions and rules go against what was actually taught by the Buddha there is little reason to keep them. Question what is told and decide yourself if it right to do so or not.

We had a few hours to spare during a stopover in KL not long back. So we jumped a cab. Apparently there is a racing track in KL that is popular with tourists. So rightly the terrific cab driver asks us if we want to do a few laps no extra charge. Just need to leave our passports as a deposit or a form of identity or something. No thanks. He and the race place people were stunned. This place is famous. Well not to us it ain't.

Erm, if they cared about these religious sites do much then why are the more often than not absolutely filthy? There are two ways up Mandalay Hill- one is for pedestrians only and it resembles a market/bird shit display area. On the other side there is a pleasant winding road with smaller pagodas along the way. Very few know about it-good-keeps the effing backpacker crew away.
