Court seeks arrest warrant for former Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra after no-show in court Yingluck was facing charges of negligence in a controversial rice subsidies scheme that carry a sentence of 10 years in prison A Thai court is seeking an arrest warrant for former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, toppled by military generals who took power in a 2014 coup, after she failed to appear to hear the verdict in her long-running trial. Thousands of supporters had massed outside the country’s supreme court on Friday morning to witness the outcome of the trial over allegations of failing to prevent alleged corruption. However Yingluck did not arrive and lawyer told the judge that his client was suffering from an issue with the fluid in her ear and was unable to attend. The judge ruled the court would issue an arrest warrant and seize her bail bond. “We don’t think that the defendant is ill. We think that the defendant is hiding or has fled ... We have pushed back the verdict date to September 27,” a statement from a Supreme Court judge said. “She asked for sick leave not to show up today.” A spokeswoman for Yingluck declined to comment. However, her lawyer said he was not sure if she was still in the country. www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/25/arrest-warrant-issued-for-former-thai-pm-yingluck-after-no-show-in-court

I'm amazed at how many idiots on TVF still believe she and her brother have done absolutely nothing wrong. There is even one clown on there moaning that the 'Junta' has stolen her bail despite her being too ill to attend the court, what a gullible chimp.
I really can't understand how (supposedly) educated Westerners get their views dictated to them by their ex bargirl wives without questioning the story.

I've always felt the scheme was evil in it's concept. Millions of people worldwide rely in rice as a subsistence food source. Thaksin wanted to increase the price. Funniest post I saw on the subject. A Luk Krung talking to his grandfather. Grandfather said it was Abhisit's fault for letting other countries grow rice.

I've always felt the scheme was evil in it's concept. Millions of people worldwide rely in rice as a subsistence food source. The flip side, however, is that Thai rice farmers are generally heavily in debt and dirt poor. Actually, "dirt poor" is quite apposite here since most don't actually own the land they farm and have to give a large proportion of their crop to their (mostly Thai-Chinese) landlords. Thai rice farmers definitely deserve a better deal. However, land reform is probably politically impossible, given the influence the wealthiest families have. Of course the ill-considered scheme benefited rice millers more than it did rice farmers. A good first step would be to remove the ridiculous rule that farmers can only sell rice for processing to millers in their own province. A bit of genuine competition couldn't do any harm.
