As a tourist it's definitely cheaper upcountry. Bangkok as a tourist is as expensive as Australia. You can get a Thai curry and rice in Terminal 21 for 35 Baht....where can you get anything like that in Sydney? Or a pint of Carlsberg for 99 Baht in Suk Soi 33/1? Again where in Sydney? A taxi ride from the river to Suk for 120 Baht....again how much in Sydney? A reasonable hotel for 2000 Baht Yes same question. Pint at my local is 125baht. Happy hour its 100 baht. Thats 5 and 4 dollars. Reasonable hotel here can be cheap also. 100 dollars easily which is only 2500 baht. I just got back from a week away , motel was 70 a night. Food isn't gonna be 35baht , but for 135 baht you can also eat in a food plaza here.

I suspect agricultural produce is cheaper in the North, vegetables etc, some prices in supermarkets/shops are also likely to be slightly less expensive since ground rent costs will be cheaper outside Bangkok.
From experience, the cost of living advantage of living outside Bangkok results from the associated lifestyle changes, there are more tempting things to do, interesting places to eat etc in Bangkok. Another area of reduced expense outside of Bangkok is that homeowners are likely to have properties with larger gardens and as a result, spend more time in them rather than spending money at the mall etc.
We were having a similar discussion to this about a week ago over at the other place and I wrote that our average monthly expenses are circa 50k and that my electricity and water bills average 1,300 and 100 baht respectively. We eat as well as anyone would and spend around 10/12k a month on groceries (all in) plus another 10k or so on meals out, we want for nothing and don't restrict ourselves because of budget. Most of that low figure results from lifestyle choices and not having children, others mileage will vary of course. FWIW when we lived in Phuket and rented, our monthly outgoings were typically around 150k.

My water bill last month was 57 Baht....you're getting ripped CM! TBC the 100 baht is solely for showers, laundry and cooking, we use a different source for the garden and outside cleaning.

I was wondering about that, given that you appear to stay in hotels. FWIW our drinking water bill is around 50/75 month, based on the season.

Wrong end of the stick in that case, sorry, I'd got the idea into my head that you are a travelling man, a globetrotter of sorts, not to be confused with Rodney of course.

A spicy pad prik gaeng and a Chang is almost as good as square sausage roll and a mug of tea! Ask Soutie. One needs a nice verse wors and a few beers Fme they are the rednecks of Southern Africa, plenty of inbreeding

bought today, Branston pickle, large jar, 180 baht per jar By "large jar" do you mean 720 gram jar? In Bangkok a 310 gram jar is 199 baht. (In the UK they don't do a 310 gram jar, but for comparison a 360 gram jar is GBP 1.40 - roughly 62 baht.) Sorry, 310gm jar, price 183 baht, home fresh mart the mall bang kapi.

Tank of water 10 to 14 baht depending how we get it. Fetch from the depot is cheapest. Gas tank lasts about 10 weeks. Diesel actually does vary, we pay more in Ranong than say NST. Annual house water bill is about 150 baht. Electric about 650 baht/month. I do live in the sticks, 40 mins from Ranong by car/pickup. Air's cleaner than a city. Only downside is no bookshop nearby, or cinema showing English language movies. Beer large Leo, 55 to 60 baht, 70 if we eat out. Jaysis man 55 Baht large Leo? rgs fill up the tank we're gonna do a Thelma and Louise! Hold fire on the Bluesmobile young man. Up my way, large leo, average is about 75-80 baht, loso joint, 80-100 baht hiso joint. Luk Thung joint up my way, 3 large leos, 200 baht. My local joint, large leo with free ice, 58 baht, NOT slurping with the soi dogs outside 7.
