Or a Brit to admit their Grandad was a Mosley Blackshirt. I think I have a better chance of getting an African to admit to being of slaver descent. Which just proves my point - the lies that people tell themselves. There were openly communist councillors in my grandfather's constituency during the war years. His work as a miner precluded his joining the forces....long shifts those guys worked I'm sure back then. He hated those commies however even as a staunch Labour man.

Its not so long back the Saudis still had slaves, best we sweep that under the carpet in the name of cheap oil. Uh, they still do. According to the US Department of State:

A misunderstanding I fear. I didn't ask to stop mentioning the truth, I only objected to the tone which suggested 'THE Dutch' as in trying to provoke. It's like referring to some Brits misbehaving while on holiday and saying 'all Brits are just hooligans who get drunk and disorderly and cause problems'. That may be the normal approach in so-called gutterpress newspapers, but that has nothing to do with 'the truth'. So you're admitting that "some," Dutch collaborated? Excellent. Now I just need to get an African to admit his Grandad was a slave trader then I'm good to go. Well colour me orange and drop me in Scotland. There's is nothing to 'admit', my dear Bleth. What is true is true. Now just to put this in perspective, some it Scotland seem to have long memories and haven't forgotten all the atrocities of the 17th and 18th century. Some have even longer memories and remember the day Scotland and Wallace were sold down the drain resulting in Scotland still being occupied country. That's the truth, the whole selective truth and nothing but the alternative truth, allegedly that is. So better stop your nonsense, before I feel obliged to really get into it.

In the 40tish young Dutch joined the German forces to fight the commies. Things happen.

I suggest you don't get into it with me, Rubl. I had an ancestor die for pledging allegiance to Wallace. I'm not from the whimsical, mist-wrapped, Brigadoon version of Scottish history

*Reminds me of the Australian thread the other year, people going nuts at the TRUTH that Aussies deserted the front line in Malaysia. As one correspondent pointed out, a Canadian officer observed cowardice in a Scottish regiment on D-Day.
Unlike others, you won't see me having an emotional reaction to uncomfortable truths about my country. If that's what happened, that's what happened - deal with it.
Which goes back to my point - you'll never get an African to admit they are descended from slave traders. You'll be lucky to find a Brit who would admit to have being a Moseley Blackshirt ( and some will still be alive ), and you'll never find an Englishmen that admits that ball didn't cross the line at the '66 World Cup.

I'm not from the whimsical, mist-wrapped, Brigadoon version of Scottish history Don't worry dear Bleth, I don't really want either. Just be a bit more nuanced in your statements. What is true is true and you won't find me denying the truth which also means I do not have to 'admit' as I never 'denied'. Occupation is a disaster and when lasting more than a few weeks a population simply needs to find ways to survive. Some find honorable ways, most just 'accept the situation and hope for the best', some will collaborate. The Dutch were not better and probably also not worse than other occupied nations. During WWII some Dutch joined the Wehrmacht out of idealism, the idea of fighting the red danger in the East. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23rd_SS_Volunteer_Panzer_Grenadier_Division_NederlandOf course, some were just the usual fools aka fascists, bullies, losers you'll see joining the oppressor for their own profit. Low life.
