I've often wondered. Portrayed as a white skinned , light coloured hair man- the typical look we are used to seeing, or more likely a dark skinned middle eastern looking refugee. Which do you think is more likely? I've met Spiderman and indeed was working with him last week...a terrible character with many flaws but a pleasant demeanor. Blether I will tell you the story when we meet...soon I am hoping.

Churh of Rome iconography to convert the masses.
Compare to Byzantine or orthodox iconography.
As one who has spent years in that part of the world, the one on the right looks closer.
Too be honest the only white people I met were Persians, and some of their women are STUNNING.

I have always been interested in theory that the Rome iconography is in fact based on the face on the shroud of Turin, and the theory the shroud is a proto photograph and done by Leonardo De Vinci and he "photoshopped" an image of has face on that of a real crucified body using a Camera obscura, ie a pin hole camera...certainly all the technology was around in his time.

From the wiki page on the Shroud "shroud's first known exhibition in France in 1357". Leonardo da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519). That leaves at least thirteen centuries where we already had icons. "The conventional image of a fully bearded Jesus with long hair emerged around 300, but did not become established until the 6th century in Eastern Christianity, and much later in the West." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depiction_of_Jesus

And both magically have/had an image of Jesus transferred by some unexplained process. It's a pair of miracles! I must abandon all rational belief and accept Christ as my Lord and Saviour!

My understanding is that the conventional image came from a painting by an artist in the eleventh century, and has been reproduced ever since. I will check my sources.
I had several fairly recent conversations with a retired architect (RC) who had great difficulty accepting that it was/is not a genuine likeness. Apologies if I have told that one before but to be honest I had a good few "early doors".

I'm RC myself (although not actively practicing) and I have no problem with believing that there's an awful lot of baggage dragged along over the last millennia. Whatever helped to keep the faithful faithful was used. Still up-to-a-point it seems the human race requires some moral framework to build their behaviour on. Without moral framework humanity is still barbarous as ever and not really much better with at times. Does that mean we need a 'religion' or just a commonly acceptable (and alas enforcable) base for ones behaviour?

Over the ages there have been multiple shrouds, splinters from the true cross, bones from the messiah, ie the trade in fake relgious relics was in overdrive post crusades and during the Renaissance Unless a church or a cathedral had some form of relic, they werent seeing the punters, and threfore no cash coming in on than that little plate every Sunday As a practiscing athiest/agnositiic i have no problem with the concept of a "real" Jesus Christ ie someone who was against the Roman occupation and encouraged revolt, was arrested and strung up...but son of god, died for people sins, ressurection, and will return....all bullshit of the highest order There is only one true religion and its called rock and roll...if this is not a religious experience i dont know what is

^^| Rumour has it that if all bones of certain saints were to be gathered it would prove they were super human with a few more arms, legs and other parts than normal human beings

Similarly, it's been said that if all of the foreskin relics of Jesus were lined up end to end they'd be six feet long. This, apparently, has been explained by his foreskin growing throughout his life, so it regularly had to be lopped off.

A friend mentioned to me you can see the foreskin in use everyday at Tel Aviv airport, it's being used as a windsock.
