We dont really have a car forum as such so putting this here
Went to go and do my 5 Year Thai DL at Rayong DNV, and a bit of lesson learned as regards passport number on your DL
Arrived 08:00am - ticket number 42 - (Rayong DNV will only deal with a max of 120 applications per day 1-60 in the morning in theory in and out by 12:00) and number 61 to 120 in the afternoon from 13:30 till office closes)
All paper work formalites, eye test, braking test completed by 09:00am, with an hour kill, before the obilgatory 1 hour safety video you have to watch, all looking good thinks Soutpeel
DMV guy gets me out the video room, "Khrap you change passport ?...yes mate, have new number ?...yes..,ah need more paper work and big boss need to sign to change in computer" - not getting license before lunch time ok ?
need to come back 13:30..came back 13:30 and sat about until 14:00 until i got my new license
So the lesson...if you pp number has changed after the last time you renewed your DL, expect / allow for extra time, i guess it makes sense as a Thai national has a single ID number which will never change in their lives so the system is geared up that way...

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. Had to go get a copy of my old driving licence because of the new passport.
The safety video was a farce. Nobody watched it. They were all playing with their mobile 'phones or snoozing.

During the safety VDO they also usually come round selling copies of the Thai highway code equivalent. I remember a few years back thinking I should be a dutiful citizen and buy one - particularly as it was only 50 baht and things do change. The guy selling it said they only have Thai versions - implying maybe that it doesn't apply to foreigners I said never mind I can read it, so bought one. I was the only foreigner in the room of among 40 or so people to take an interest and buy one

Back in 2014, I went into the BKK drivers license office to get mine. It was a struggle as I didn't speak the language and I was on my own, no translator. Eventually, I find myself in a room with a bunch of other people, performing brake testing and proving I wasn't color blind.
I walked out that day with a Thai DL! But it was for a car. I wanted one for a motorcycle. Err... I guess they just put me in the car group because as a farang, I must be rich and driving a car.

My only bitch about the whole Thai DL thing is that all the forms are in Thai, which nesscitates the long haired dictionary going with me , and i guess RGS would comment, after 17 years in Thailand Soutie you kant, you should be able to read basic Thai Which is a valid comment, but i am a lazy kant... The funny thing is they dont even do a proper eye test, yes you do that colour test one, but not an actual eye test, for the first time uncles soutie went out and bought glasses specfically for this DL extension as his eyes are going and he dropped 15k for multi focal top of the range specs and the fkers never even tested my vision properly

The funny thing is they dont even do a proper eye test, yes you do that colour test one, but not an actual eye test My gripe is with the peripheral vision test. Anybody with a basic knowledge of biology knows that the eye's colour receptors are clustered at the centre of the retina, so colour perception in peripheral vision is very limited.

I have red/green deficiency and have never been able to come even close to passing the Ishihara test, i have no problem identifying colours the way the DMV do their test, but the day they implement the Ishihara plates (if they ever do) i am fked

Not so sure that it does not matter, I would rather they saw me in their peripheral vision than knew I was a purple car with green stripes.
