Peter Lorimer, Scotland and LUFC midfielder has died aged 74. He's been unwell for a while. He was a firm favourite with the Elland Rd fans.
www.bbc.com/sport/football/56234156Peter Lorimer had a massive reputation of being gifted with the hardest shot in football.
During kick around when I was a nipper, if anyone scored with a screamer of a shot, up would go the cry of ‘Lorimer’.
I was lucky enough to watch him play
The first professional football game that I attended was against Leeds United and Peter Lorimer was playing that day, and oh, how he played.
It was 16th August 1975 (thank you Google).
As it was my first match and as we (me and a couple of school friends) had never previously been to Villa Park we ended up in the away end, The Witton Lane Stand, so we were right in the middle of about 7,000 Leeds fans.
The Leeds side that day was packed to the gills with legends, their side was:
David Harvey
Paul Madeley
Paul Reaney
Gordon McQueen
Frank Gray
Trevor Cherry
Billy Bremner
Terry Yorath
Duncan McKenziePeter Lorimer
Alan Clarke
Anyone of those players could walk straight into any modern Premier side and instantly become their ‘hard man’.
We lost the game 1:2, with Lorimer scoring both goals.
The Leeds fans had a terrible reputation for violence at that time, so standing amongst these Neanderthals decked out in yellow and white we celebrated with them, fearing upsetting them would bring about retributions.
