I agree that a tracker for the US is the way to go I bought VTI a few months back but as mentioned above the dividends get a 30% withholding tax hit (even though I submitted a W8BEN as non-resident alien). Looking for an more tax friendly alternative, or an accumulating UCITS (USD priced). The IRS changed all the rules relating to non-resident aliens (non-res green card holders), once you have tax deducted at source it's there's for ever and you can't reclaim. That was one of my biggest motivators for becoming UK resident again. I receive a US SSc pension which has already been reduced for various reasons, so many times, it's not funny.

Your problem is your broker and/or your country of residence. As a resident of Thailand the WHT should be 15%, and that's what you pay if you use a broker like Internaxx. Use Saxo Singapore, however and you pay 30%. Added: Incidentally you should consider the US inheritance tax situation, too, before investing in the States.
