The thread for giving recommendations of what to read, or what you are currently reading.
i am currently reading , "Detroit, An American Autopsy" by Charlie LeDuff
reallly interesting book on the destruction of Detroit caused by endemic corruption and greed, which has led a once prosperous city into the depths of chaos. Anyone interested in reading about this chaos, I'd highly recommend it

Next one that I'm reading at present is
Cambodias Curse, The Modern a history of a Troubled Land by Joel Brinkley
Certainly highlights the rampant corruption, dirty politics and I effctiveness of the UN
Would be good to hear of any other recommendations, as both books I've nearly finished

... And a funny German one by Timur Vermes: Er ist wieder da da( he is back again)... The English version is titled "Look who's back..." - I picked up a copy at Vienna Airport on Thursday. Unfortunately, I had too much time to kill at the airport and ended up sleeping most of the way home, so have not progressed very far through it. The writing style, even in translation, is convincing - or entertaining. SC

If you like historical faction. Conn Iggulden has 2 good series out and a 3rd almost complete. 1 series is about the life of Julius Caesar. The middle 3 books the author used Caesar's own writings. The 5th book covers events after his assassination.
The 2nd series is about the Mongols and Genghis Khan's descendants up to Kublai Khan. Taken from the Mongols own oral histories. If Ogedai Khan had not died when he did, the Mongols were on their way to the Atlantic. They had already humbled the best that Europe had to offer. However they had to go home and swear allegiance to the new Khan and never came back.
The 3rd and as yet unfinished series covers the Wars of the Roses. On my fishing trips to The Swale, I used to pass through Towton. There is a memorial there. Every year someone lays flowers. That was the site of UK's bloodiest battle. 50000 men took part and over I think a 10 hour period some 26,000 died. The Lancastrian arrived 1st but chose to fight into the wind. It was snowing, the Yorkist archers must have thought it was Christmas.
Another good read is the Dangerous book for boys. Should bring back memories of a distant childhood.
