Hong Kong has an abundance of wet markets where you can buy just about anything fresh food wise. I prefer these markets over the more pricey Wellcome or Carrefour chains for fresh vegetables and fruit, not only is the produce fresh as can be, but they will even kill that chicken for you on the spot, or club that fish on the head while you wait and prepare it for easy cooking. I love the vibe, the smells and the atmosphere of places like these, where you can haggle the price down and be with the locals. HK has regular HIN9 scares ( swine and bird flu ) Hasn't deterred me from these places. Another fave of mine is Saikung and the fisherman who sell off the small boats but it's a bit of a drive from my place. Hoping CC can do a Chinese foodie section.

It's pretty much true that the Chinese will eat anything that moves and isn't on wheels. Apart from the fake milk powder of a few years ago, there was that fake egg scare as well in the mainland. Mushrooms are wonderful and the variety is great. Haven't come across any magic ones. The long mushroom is great in soups.

The odd little things in the bag are lotus seeds, also great in soups. Eggs done in five spice with red vinegar. ( My Chinese keyboard is playing up or I would put up the Mandarin) These are very nice. Duck or goose eggs I don't really like, and the Thousand Year eggs burried in soil are an acquired taste.

Quail eggs are really nice, I have a thread here somewhere about peeling eggs, that's the pain of hard boiled eggs.

Pig's liver fried up with plenty of onions is good too. I also buy trotters and ribs. Pigeons. A pestilence in most places in the world, winged vermin no less unless you're in HK.

Onto fish. Shanghai hairy crabs are a delicacy in this part of the world. People try to smuggle them in from the mainland. Years ago I was on a flight from Shanghai to HK and a woman had bags of crabs in her carry on. Confiscated at customs no doubt.

Pickles and dried fare. Tofu, many different types, it's a misunderstood food ingredient to many.

A couple of clips below of the markets near to our house and farm in Surin. Clip no.2 with the commentary by some colonial chappy is but some 12 kilometers from our Surin home and it is a great place to shop. As an aside we now have in the local aresa very large Lotus Tesco outlet civilization (?) as we perhaps see it has arrived!!!

Baozi or steamed pork buns, but they come will all sorts of fillings, vegetable, red bean many others. Those buns are great with red bean filling and to accompany the pork served in Mae Salong in Thailand....a place with a revolving table as I recall...one of the best meals I have ever eaten.

My local market, best avoided, , the comment at 58 seconds in sums it up (its stinking here). Never mind right next door is PanThip Plaza 2.
