Ah, the floods! We got a kid from Pattana after the floods wrecked the families business. This kids English and critical thinking skills were phenomenal, he was several years ahead of the kids in his new class here at my place. His knowledge of phonics was near native. I give Pattana my vote. He recently also got two kids from Harrow and I must say I am surprised about what they don't know considering the fees of the place. There you go Fletch!

Think so, not sure. I was going to add a bit more about Harrow but had to dash to a lesson. So, these 3 kids we got. Lovely kids, well mannered, respectful and very eager to take part in lessons. However, they were essentially illiterate in both English and Thai. As it turns out, two of them have moderate dyslexia and it was never picked up. Erm, I thought everyone there had QTS! Why on earth did they not see some tell tale red flags such as mixed up vowels, slow reading, skipped pages in notebooks due to a problem seeing left and right the fact that both complained that some of the word appeared to be moving. All basics. Shame on Harrow for not giving them the support they deserved. Schools that are more interested in profits than the individuals they are supposed to be preparing for the world make me a bit cross. Rant over!

He must be part time EAL or why are they paying him chicken feed? I may have it wrong but didn't he say somewhere he was on 45k?

Just though I'd post an update on here. We moved the girls to Patana in August. We were thoroughly disappointed with Shrewsbury. Very commercial and the key priority seems for them to make money out of you as their business. If you're going to be that it should at least be value for money, and it simply wasn't. Although Shrewsbury has international teachers and a UK curriculum that's only part of what would make a good international school. It would be more accurate to say Shrewsbury is a Thai school aimed at the wealthier end of Thai society. It felt like international kids like ours are there to just make up the numbers so they could call themselves international. Around 70% are officially Thai. In reality it's more as they count Thais born overseas with a foreign passport to say Thai-Thai parents as foreign so they can meet the quotas/ limits. The individual teachers were fine at Shrewsbury, and every one of our girls form teachers was very good. The way the school is run though is disappointing and the teachers don't seem empowered. Even the Heads of Primary etc would give the excuse things are outside their control, and it was difficult to find someone to take responsibility. Any issues and they try and make out it's you that's the problem. Their attitude is if you don't like it we can help you find somewhere else. Could go on, but very disappointed in Shrewsbury. I feel guilty for putting the girls there for 3 years. They weren't as happy as they'd been in the other schools they've been at, and Mrs Smile was thoroughly disappointed as well. Well not really "as well" in reality much more than me. She was pushing for change earlier, while I was wasting time trying to see if things would improve and stick it out. Based on Shrewsbury we were wondering if we might need to move back to the UK for the right education. I'd choose a UK government run school in a good area in the UK over their environment any day. On the other hand, Patana is fantastic. The girls are really happy. They settled in very quickly, and have made lots of international friends. There's a great atmosphere. The teachers seem very happy, and the smiles on people's faces, sense of humour people have is very noticeable. It really is a true international school and exactly what we were hoping for. More so. As a non-commercial school it's cheaper than Shrewsbury too. So not only are the girls and Mrs Smile much happier and the school streets ahead of Shrewsbury on so many levels but it's easier on Fletch's pocket too So without a doubt if someone asked I'd recommend Patana and caution against Shrewsbury. A big thanks also to everyone for their input. Took me a while as the Mrs keeps reminding me, but we got there in the end. Particular thanks to buhi for his input on here, as well as the PMs. Can't thank you enough

Pattana for sure, great school and great facilities.
My old house mate from University taught there for the last 6 years, and I have known a few other teachers from there, all reputable , stand up people, and all gave great feedback about the school

Yes just did those this week number4.
First time for us all doing it that way round and both girls were a bit shy doing it. But it worked very well. Plenty of time also to raise points and ask the teachers as well as the kids. Even though only 20 minutes we covered a lot. Much more interactive and like the 3 way child-teach-parent interaction. Also helps build on it afterwards.
Shrewsbury was only 15 minutes and if you let the teachers run things it was more just focused on content of what they have been doing in class. I'm not not so interested in the content of the syllabus and what they've been doing, but how they are doing.
Seems like everything we do at Patana is professional, enjoyable and spot on. Much more a feeling of trust of you know they're in good hands.
Cheers Fletch
