It's like a Mexican time capsule. Poverty and trade sanctions from the West have almost made time stand still. They are still driving cars built decades ago and manage to keep them running. Of course they have all of the bright building colors one might expect. Some might not know that when Castro had his revolution he nationalized private property of foreigners including oil companies, manufacturing and others. That killed the jobs because Cuba couldn't run them after they were stolen and of course communist Cuba got cut off from the world. It's a great place to visit. The people are poor but friendly, the weather is great (usually) the food is good and you can learn to smoke a great cigar. Time Capsule today, from prosperous days.Cheers.

A few years back I was to have a meeting with Fidel Castro and the Minister for Health of another (unmentioned) country but it never came to pass. Which is a shame because I really wanted a ride in one of those old ragtop Caddy's.
It was about landfill construction, nothing interesting.

I was there is 1982 and stayed at Santiago de cuba.
Didn't get around much except on a crappy 49cc moped but I LOVED every minute and the people were GREAT!!
One of my fondest memories, though I'm sure it's changed a lot now.

Been many times, love it.
Things are changing with the USA and no doubt will impact tourism, up until now it was mostly Canadians, Spanish, French, Dutch and Brits, off season the Argies (wear a Falklands Forever British t-Shirt and they leave the bar in a hurry)
Varadero is great but rather busy for my liking, my favourite place is Holguin to sit back and let a week pass by whilst enjoying everything an all inclusive has to offer. Santiago is dark sand and a lot of locals.
In the late 80's the food was awful, the good news is most of the chains are from Spain and they bring their chefs so it's improved a lot in recent years.
Check out the Canadian websites for special last minute deals and good hotel descriptions.

I intend a proper snappers trip. The place is golden for togs. My best mate & biz partner who sadly passed away Nov. last year had asked me if he can take some time off to do some travel in Cuba & Latin America. I agreed. Off he went. I didn't hear from him for nearly 4 months but when I did my inbox was flooded with pix & clips of Cuba & him in various places/poses and damn...I was jealous. He was away for about a year & a half & kept me posted of his adventures. Lucky man. Everywhere he went he said the people were great and he had "big fun" everywhere. Richard simply said upon his return..."Ya gotta go." I hope I can some day.

I guess it really wouldn't be a big deal to go do Cuba M...but when you get to my age ones body & brain have conflicts of interest in many areas. Still...I may go...if I can convince the missus to come along. We'll see. I never once believed the US anti Cuba propaganda...never. Neither did Richard & that's why he went.
