Scary stuff - RBS has advised traders to "sell everything" in an alarming research note that warns of a global deflationary crisis. That would mean prices start to decline, creating a vicious cycle where people hang onto their money rather than invest it in the economy. “Sell everything except high quality bonds. This is about return of capital, not return on capital. In a crowded hall, exit doors are small,” RBS said in a note to clients. Shoddy reporting. Research notes are sent to clients, not to traders.
And anyway, any trader worth his salt could make money by shorting if stock prices were expected to decline (local compliance rules notwithstanding).

I've been scared to look at my shares since the start of the year and was pleasantly surprised to see my main holding up by 25%.
Just goes to show how unpredictable markets are.
Although, to be honest, I've taken a hammering in a couple of minor holdings.

Sounds like someone either looking for publicity or quoted without full context. or perhaps someone maybe trying a bit of game theory to influence the market
Not sure either exactly which markets the guy is talking about: equities, bonds, currencies, commodities, etc etc. "Sell everything" sounds like rather a sensationalist panic, or out of context. "Everything except high quality bonds": Gold? USD cash? various derivatives he could buy to short? doesn't really make sense or give a full picture, in either of the two articles above.
Yes will probably be a tough year. But not exactly panic and Armageddon. If I was one of their clients I'd hope for better and more complete advice from that.

Given the reputation of RBS, should one really be taking advice or belive anything they say
With the current carnage going on glad all my stuff is in USD Currency wise, i only work with USD, THB and ZAR...and the way things are going with the ZAR it will be cheaper for me to live and eventually retire at home than in Thailand....seen predictions on the USD/ZAR reaching 20 ZAR to the USD....if it does get to that...i am laughing

You guys probably know. How much money would you have to pay Obama to remove the sanctions and let Iran sell oil on the international market and put the shale producers out of business?
