Note to self - *if you ever get on the grog with blether, do it over the phone* I've calmed down, I promise. Last time I was out with Smokie it was only a bottle of whisky and a few beers. I don't know how much Smokie drank but he's usually fit for about 15 pints. I sent him home in a tuk-tuk that night - I was just being careful cos he has a terrible habit of falling asleep on public transport when drunk. I kind of figured that the rattle of the tuk-tuk would keep him awake. ...................................... Then again I have another Scottish pal in CM who's good at drinking to oblivion - he's fallen out of a tuk-tuk three times in the last six months. I'm going to get him one of those baby harnesses so we can tie him in. In saying that I have another Scottish pal in CM who can drink a bottle of vodka and look like he's stone cold sober. By his own words he's a functioning alcoholic, and the fittest alcoholic I know. This is a guy that can hammer a bottle of vodka of an evening, get up in the morning, and cycle up to Doi Suthep. If you don't know Doi Suthep, trust me, that's some feat. Strange how different people react to alcohol.

I know the road up to Doi Suthep well and I doubt I could even drive my car up there after drinking a bottle of vodka the night before, never mind riding a pushbike up there.
Besides that blether, I am learning to walk again (today I set a new record, I am now up to 17 steps without hanging on to anything, or anyone) and socialising with scoundrels like you would set my rehab back months.

Hang in with the rehab it does help. I need a kick in the backside to keep doing soe...getting a bit slack these days.

Hope the lads in CM can handle the medical bills that will come their way. The other side of the same coin, the three pint screamers, guys whose liver is so shot thats all they can handle these days. Guys who drink two JD and cokes and have to go outside to the car and sleep it off for a few hours before starting again. Seen them up my way, guys, 20+ pints on a session now wearing Mamy Poko and colostomy bags. I will never criticize anyone for going on the p**s, be aware of whats coming. See George Best and Jimmy Greaves for details.

I will never drink again at the same giddy level I used to (thank God) for a number of reasons. After being "dry" for seven months while I was an inmate in hospital I found I just can't handle more than a couple of beers since I was paroled. My walking is unsteady at the best of times so adding alcohol to the mix is not a good idea. Also I had a good friend who died from liver failure caused by heavy drinking eight days a week. That last couple of months before he died was heartbreaking, watching him age so quickly and seeing the pain and anguish he went through.
I do miss those old days but that pleasure has been replaced by watching my two and a half year old son growing up. The money I used to spend on booze is now spent trying to keep up with his wardrobe, he is outgrowing his clothes at an alarming rate.
Back to the op, that story reminded me of the time I went to an ATM in Kathmandu and found it would not spit any money out. The bulk of my money was in an investment account which I had no card for and the money in my ATM account had dried up. Luckily I had already paid for the overland trip to Lhasa in Tibet so I only needed enough money to fly back to Thailand. I scraped together all the USD, AUD and Thai baht I had stashed in my passport wallet and just made it back.
