I like The Davis hotel on Soi 24 ( yes, I know who owns it ) Stayed there once. Breakfast really turned my stomach. Not because of the food, which was passable, but the large number of fat, elderly men with their pay-by-the-hour girlfriends. Funnily enough, the only other Bangkok hotel I've stayed in with the same affliction is the Tai-pan which, I believe, is owned by the same gentleman.

The Taipan breakfast is awful...they used to take 300 Baht a night off my bill to not eat it. The Davis I never attempted breakfast....I liked the rooms there....and cheap for the time I booked. Long way down that Soi however.

Robin Hood does nice food but it's too dark and boring. Same with the Dubliner except the food isn't anywhere near as good imo. Nice to sit outside and drink though. Royal Oak is a complicated one as you don't want to get a seat stuck in the ever moving sun but being right at the back in the dark doesn't entice me either. Food's OK and pints are decent enough so it's my 1st choice if I'm in the area.. Good grief man.....this could have been written by me...only to add the Robin Hood has had some of the most asinine staff ever to grace any bar in the world!

Robin Hood, home to the sourest-faced waitress in all Bangkok. The Dubliner - what can I say, the Royal Oak? decent enough shop. All day happy hour ( till 8.00 p.m. ) in the Royal Oak, watery draft Leo 99 baht. I don't mind Leo, but this is not a good pint - so it was Magners for me. 199 baht a pint, I'll call that decent enough value for Bangkok. Cornish cider in the Robin Hood, all day special at 99 baht - had one pint and got heartburn. If I ever need paint stripper I know where to go. I stayed in The Dubliner as I had arranged to meet some people for a few beers, and it was going to be in this soi. I'm aware of the rumours about this place - and you'd normally never see me dead in an Irish pub. The rooms are below par, but cheap enough for downtown BKK. The breakfast is good, to be fair. I dislike engaging with the Bangkok taxis more than I have to, which is another reason why I stayed here - everything I need on my doorstep. A couple of decent enough looking restaurants, Japanese/Western fusion apparently being the selling point in one, with a Korean restaurant across the road. I note there are no soi dogs in this soi. A Japanese bakery, which I refuse to enter. One of my companions went in and loaded up as he's not down this way often. A couple of decent enough looking massage places, don't know if they are straight businesses or rub and tug. I do know that they are very limited in what they offer, Thai massage, oil massage, back, head and shoulder. Prices look fine, but I don't do massages after having my knee wrecked by a Thai traditional massage two years ago. I like The Davis hotel on Soi 24 ( yes, I know who owns it ) and the President Park across the road is decent value though not as good. Problem is, Soi 24 is one boring Soi. Soi 22 looks far more active, buy if you can't stand getting harassed by masseuse, then it ain't for you. This soi is good enough for one night - I appreciate the fact that the three pubs don't have the lady element going on, and I reckon the Royal Oak probably has the best staff. Can you think of a better soi with a couple of decent pubs for future reference? This will be answered in due course your bletherance....as there is a place with many bars for us to explore but it is dangerous Tiger country.

I am informed that Tigers can be pacified by medicating them with Jameson’s Snake Oil # 3. The correct dosage should be somewhere between ‘can’t drink too much tonight, promised the wife’ & a skinfull. Appeasement can also be gained by bestowing the striped feline with certain melodic offerings, such as Irish punk/folk music, the Bay City Rollers, Johnny Cash or Frank Sinatra, etc. If the cat stops purring, administer the next dose and ensure that he is kept in a medicated state.

Never been to the Robin Hood, doubt if I ever will. From what I’ve read about the place it can be full of tossers, which is the same reason why I never drank in Joe Banana’s when I lived in HK.
