My mother had a Chinese vase. I doubt it was a real Chinese vase, probably a cheap copy from Walthamstow market. I loved Walthamstow market as a baby, my earliest memories. Back to the vase. No digress. Grandmother, father's mother collected Toby jugs. They were weird, , I would now say obscene, amusing. I had as a three year old no idea.
The vase was a point of focus. Strange shapes, dragons, birds, plants, script, ( I could not read anyway). I remember that vase. I wanted to go to that magic land; a land that was not Walthamstow.
Travel I did. Always. Never the leap.
I understand that vase now.

Ahhh I used to go to the auction at the Southwark community hall...lots of tat there...Toby jugs a favourite.
Long closed now...when the Borough Market had two stalls it was thriving with locals...now it's the reverse.
Shanghai I want to visit now after <Bunny boiler> glowing review...so many places to see!

I've got several Chinese vases, all hideous. Gaudy with gold embellishments, swirling dragons what you would call ultra kitch. Courtesy of mum-in-law who's tastes border on the ultra extreme. I made a hole in the bottom of one to use as a plant pot and she was scanadlized, went on a rant that vase was very old. Well how was I supposed to know the monstrosity was very old. Now that's supposed to bring bad luck. It is almost a metre tall and my white azaleas look good in it. The others are packed away, one I use as a pasta holder as it's got a lid. Anyway I collect masks, have many old Chinese Opera ones gracing my study walls.

^Cool. I have two Chinese vases as well. The girl who used to live here left them for me because I asked her. I haven't used them yet, but they are nice to look at. White with many dragon, flower designs. This thread reminded me to start putting flowers in them.

Honestly one of mine looks like an urn to put someone's ashes in. It's probably Qing dynasty or something.
