Panama Papers: Mossack Fonseca leak reveals elite's tax havens
Attachment DeletedA huge leak of confidential documents has revealed how the rich and powerful use tax havens to hide their wealth. Eleven million documents were leaked from one of the world's most secretive companies, Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. They show how Mossack Fonseca has helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and avoid tax. The company says it has operated beyond reproach for 40 years and has never been charged with criminal wrong-doing. French President Francois Hollande hailed the "good revelations" which would "increase tax revenues from those who commit fraud". The documents show 12 current or former heads of state and at least 60 people linked to current or former world leaders in the data. They include the Icelandic Prime Minister, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugson, who had an undeclared interest linked to his wife's wealth. He has said he will not resign. The files also reveal a suspected billion-dollar money laundering ring involving close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Gerard Ryle, director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), said the documents covered day-to-day business at Mossack Fonseca over the past 40 years. "I think the leak will prove to be probably the biggest blow the offshore world has ever taken because of the extent of the documents," he added. www.bbc.com/news/world-35918844

I think we all know Russia is involved in dodgy cash transactions so nothing new there. Far as I know there's nothing illegal about paying minimal tax or no tax on cash sent to your own Panama account it's the where the cash came from originally that will make them nervous. Whoever leaked these papers should be sent to jail imo.

This goes far deeper than Russia, if you read other sources, British Peers, PM Cameron's "old man", etc etc, agreed nothing illegal about tax avoidance, but tax evasion is and at this point nobody knows what these individuals have been up to ?...they would need to be investigated case for case....Setting up a shelf company is not illegal either, but its what that company is used for is when the legality is questioned. Lets put it this way...on investigation of these accounts and shelf companies...I would wager over 50% of them have been or are being used for dodgy purposes... Tax evasion, paying bribes, slush funds for various things..time will tell if it turns out the vast majority of these accounts related to some form of illegal activity are you still of the opinion the person who leaked the documents should be jailed ?

It's a bit like the wikileaks fiasco. On 1 hand we all love the gritty details. On the other he's broken into personal emails. If it were my emails being hacked then published I'd want him jailed- but it's not my emails so I don't mind either way. Still against the law though.

"Privacy is a fundamental human right that is being eroded more and more in the modern world. Each person has a right to privacy, whether they are a king or a beggar," Ramon Fonesca.
Wonder if it was Anonymous who hacked them?

Correct but, people cant can get all upset with Wikileaks, and Panama papers, when government agencies around the world are doing exactly the same, except they are not publishing the info, that's the only difference.

Situation normal for the Brits, I would expect that from them. Meanwhile a lot of the other countries will do the same, point the finger, make the bad guys look even badder. The Chinese will execute the ones who are exposed. Not for being corrupt, but for being caught.
