Please share some interesting things you've learnt over the years about Bangkok.
Thanon Henri Dunant (Swiss) was a founder of the Red Cross and Bangkok named a street for him on its centenary in 1965
Soi Bearing was named for a German medicine manufacturer.
Soi Lasalle for French missionary's that came to Thailand (not sure of the year)
On Nut is named after a wealthy family many of whom still live and work in the area.
Soi Cowboy is the nickname given to the infamous street and is named after an American (Vietnam War ?)

Travelers beware.
One presumes that certain areas are exempt from the laws below!!
We all know underwear is pretty essential, but not as much as in Thailand and Bangkok, where leaving the house with no underwear on can very well land you in jail. Going bare-chested in public is illegal too.

We probably all know this one - Bangkok's or Krung Thep as the locals call it official name is the longest name of any city in the world.
Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahinthara Yutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukamprasit.
City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Visvakarman at Indra's behest.

Wireless Road or Thanon Wittayu was named after a radio just in case some people don't know what a wireless is/was.

Now this could be described as a Bangkok mystery fact.
Jim Thompson (b. 1906), an American who moved to Bangkok after World War II, credited with reviving Thailand's silk industry, mysteriously disappeared into the Malaysian jungles in 1967.

Is pandan that orrible fish? No it's a leaf, used in cakes and other dishes as a condiment. Also used in "kai hor bai toey", chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves, one of the best Thai starters / appetisers:

Incidentally, before T. G. "Cowboy" Edwards opened up his bar Soi Cowboy was known as 'Soi Gold Label' after a bar of the same name. Here is a picture of Cowboy.

Problem now is where to go for a leak in that soi......When the bar started you could always go in the rice fields on the other side of the soi.
