In a previous profession I had the pleasure of visiting many peoples homes, the rich and fameous ... and those, less so.
We (the man I was indentured to) and I once went to a very wealthy persons home (not obscenely wealthy ... just very).
Parked in his (heat insulated) triple garage was his Roller.
Truth be known, it was actually 4 cars wide, but when you add the wine collection and a generous width allowance for opening the Roller's doors ... 3 cars was the fit.
So, we did what we had to do and we were exiting through the garage we struck up a conversation about wine.
He had lined one wall with open ended ceramic pipes ... abut a foot long ... good for holding and partially insulating wine bottles.
So, imagine a wall of wine (bottles), only about a metre (3 feet) high. Some were empty, but most were occupied.
I couldn't resist asking about the collection and why it was placed as it was.
His reply made me smile.
All the 'drink now / $40 Budget bottles' wines were placed towards to top of the stack. Easy enough for him to grab a bottle as he was exiting the garage.
Just wind the roller's window down, reach out, and grab a bottle (or 2).
But THE GOOD STUFF, the like of which might set you back $100+ were strategically placed towards the bottom of the rack.
If he were to choose a bottle of this vintage, he had to actually exit the Roller and make an effort and reach down and select what he wanted.
It was a case of being the 'Top Shelf' being the 'Bottom Row'.
Ah, the lives of those, unlike me, with a bit of coin!
A bit like Mr Fletch me thinks
