Mont Redmond
Biography
Mont Redmond was born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada in 1958. After studying at the University of Toronto, interrupted by a youth exchange program that took him to Indonesia, Mont returned to Southeast Asia in 1979. Following two years in Indonesia and a one-year stay in India, Mont arrived in Thailand, where he remained almost continuously for the next 16 years.
Throughout the years of trying various types of work (teaching English, exporting, importing, editing a tourist publication, etc.) and raising a family, Mont lived close to the local Thai community in Bangkok. These experiences enabled him to learn fluent Thai, both written and spoken, and to crystallize his observations in "Wondering into Thai Culture" – a book now in its fourth printing.
Mont and his family moved to Canada in 1998 for the sake of his children's education. He now lives in London, Ontario, and is once again struggling to understand the community in which he lives.
Re reading yet again.
Reason; there's a western word , a slight altercation with a pickup.
No words were exchanged, except with my wife.
The usual stand off, who backs up to give way. I naturally did, no reason (western word) not to. Wife has picked up on my western logic and started blethering about the idiot pickup driver. I simply stated, Thai way, loss of face, no altruism. I do not feel inferior because I gave way, in fact as a westerner I feel kind, generous, and a good man (Somchai).
Bun Khun.
That's not bun khun wife exclaimed. It is the result I declared. Over to you.

If you do not have this book, have not read it, I recommend it.
Sometimes I forget I am in Thailand and revert to my inculcated culture.
Name a Thai influenced by Kant; I bet you are, but not aware of it.

Your Mrs should apologize for the sacking of Ayutthaya, as all Thai know it was a monstrous act by the Burmese. Has there ever been an official apology?
Indeed by inductive reasoning the Mon might well be responsible for the atomic bombs that were dropped on the Japanese.
If Siam had not been routed by those barbarians, peace and prosperity would have flourished all over Asia. Japan would never have become an imperial nation, as it would have devoted its own national development to Thai Theravada Buddhism. Peace would have conquered the world. The Mon destroyed any chance of that inevitable prospect . They truly should apologize to the whole world and pay compensation to Siam for their wanton act of vandalism.
