I don't use my mobile phone - I don't have a UK or Thai sim - will they force me to buy one?
I think not.

I do not like this as it does not really accomplish anything not already there. What I am in favour of is banning roaming so that overseas phones coan not connect to the network. This would mean a Thai simcard would need to be bought and identity shown but there is no need for a different sim to Thais as long as registration is done. THis wold prevent roaming cards being able to detonate bombs etc as they can now..

Sounds like another of those hairbrained schemes that never come to fruition. So may loopholes and flaws in it.
What happens to people with no mobile phone? What happens to people who need to retain their overseas contact roamining number while here, but their phone only accepts one SIM card at a time etc..
Then of course there's so many easy ways around it. Use 2 phones. Use your Thai phone for official purposes and even leave it in one place, while using a foreign phone for whatever.

It will never work. Why not just place a microchip in the ear of all tourists on arrival. ( sarcasm intended)
You need your passport and/or ID to get a SIm card here and there is face recognition.
Scary thing is Big Brother is watching you. Forget security from a roaming SIM it all goes via China Unicom in some weird way in the mainland. Seriously. I had log in issues here a while back and even though I was using Tapatalk for a bit the IP threw up as China Unicom, hits servers in China before hitting where you hail from.
HK SIM and then I switched to Aussie one same, same.

Why do they need the overseas number........20 years ago it was not needed. I do not think it is unreasonable to block global roaming....too dangerous as many bombs worldwide have shown. I do think it is unreasonable to have a special sim rather than just have to register for a normal one.

I find it hard to accept this absolute need for mobile phones and total accessibility. Many years ago...think 1970 I remember having to go to the PO and wait for an extended period to make an overseas call. At that time there were very few telephones in Bangkok and to gget one you just about had to buy the building which would be worth a lot more because it had a line. What real difference is blocking the use of outside phones here and making you use a Thai number. The only one I can think of is safety from terroists.

My worry is not being tracked...its what hairbrained idiots in the government will do with the information.
I remember their website being open in the south allowing you to view where all the foreigners lived....unbelievable.

I love their harebrained schemes and crackdowns, veritable extravaganzas of loopholes, flaws and bad planning. Could you imagine the authorities trying to track Jason Bourne if he came to the LOS ? He would have them so confused it would take three lots of free elections/changes of government and five coups to work out that not only is he not staying at the Hoten that he said he was, he is not even a real person !

^^| flame? Nah, just in the right mood. I wrote a small program manipulating memory and it coredumps on UNIX. Now contemplating the fun of it all and implementing trace and debugging. After all works I might look into SIM tracking to give smokie a boost
