The plebiscite to decide whether marriage equality should be legalised in Australia will be held in February 2017. The Daily Telegraph reported late on Saturday that the issue would not be put to the Australian public until early next year. Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister, had pledged before the July election to hold the plebiscite before the end of the year. The plebiscite will reportedly ask: “Do you approve of a law to permit people of the same sex to marry?” www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/aug/20/marriage-equality-plebiscite-to-be-held-in-australia-in-2017-reports

Could very well put a very different perspective on the marriage line, ''With this ring I thee wed.'' The Celebrant then asks for the ''bride's ring'' from the best man. !!!

I'm waiting for the plebiscite when it will be lawful to marry your goat, dog etc, seriously, much ado about nothing same as should women be ordained as priests, all these celebs coming out of the closet amongst other things I consider insignificant to making a difference to the world turning. townhall.com/columnists/michaelbrown/2011/09/19/the_man_who_married_the_goat_and_reflections_on_the_meaning_of_marriageFrom that article. But is marriage simply the union of two human beings or is it specifically the union of a man and a woman? If the latter, then the union of two men or two women is no more a “marriage” then is the union of a man and an animal, reptile, wall, or whatever, regardless of how much the two human parties love each other. In fact, there are conservatives who have asked, “If a woman can marry a woman, why can’t she marry her dog (or, horse, or plant, etc.)?” There is even a gay activist, watchdog website called BoxTurtleBulletin, deriving its name from remarks prepared for Senator John Corwyn in 2004 (although never spoken by him): “It does not affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box turtle. But that does not mean it is right.”

It seems you are confusing the rituals with the practice. Frankly I could not care less who marries who or who lives with who or with what. I do see a problem with obtaining consent from marriage by our bovine friends but then I have seen a few cows dressed in white and a lot of mutton dressed as lamb. As long as there is consent and agreement. What I do object to is the new system where if you live together for 2 years you are considered the same as married for property settlements. What should constitute a marriage or the same is a full consent that you wish to enter into the area of property settlements.

That's to protect unsuspecting women from scoundrels who don't want to marry, after all, why marry the cow when the milk is free? Not being sexist it is to protect males too, why marry the pig if the sausage is free? All jokes aside, if you are together for two years and have children then the law makes sense.

me.
That two year rule has been in operation for a good number of years within the U K regarding property settlements and welfare social security payments and liabilities if a couple parted after the two year period as the then DHSS would track down the errant party and put an attachment of earnings on them to pay for the dependents they had inherited and then left behind.
I can recall a case in our local newspaper where a woman who had had some 4 disastrous relationships was revealed to be receiving payments from all of her ex partners plus social security while conducting a fifth relationship.
She got time as I recall as the sums involved were large and the fraud complex,

I don't understand the fuss in a country where it is clearly legal to marry your own sister.

Google's Autocomplete Suggestions kicked in at this stage and they were - a sheep, a dog, a pig...................... I thought "Holy shit ! What the hell are they putting in the water over there".
