Hi,
I am planning a trip to Bali and/or Lombok or the Gilli Islands for Christmas. I'm a little undecided as to exactly where of these places I'll go and spend time in. If anyone has been to any of these places, I'd be happy to hear your suggestions on nice beaches, accommodation and things to do!
Thanks

No. Nobody has ever been to Bali. Ever.
Well, apart from me. Been to Bali a few times. Lombok and the Gilli's too, more than once.
Broadly speaking, Bali has a lot to offer, from hedonistic pleasure to cultural experiences, to quiet contemplative retreats. Lombok is much less developed. And the Gilli's really only have magic mushrooms and diving (albeit rather good diving).
How about sharing what interests you? Then someone (possibly I) can impart some wisdom more relevant to your passions.
(And if what interests you is gourmet dining, I can recommend two brilliant restaurants in Ubud. Both are really worthy of Michelin stars.)

Went to Bali after high school as part of the YR12 end of year muck up. Any clown who doesn't know Indonesia ends up in the tourist trap of Bali. When I went it was a fun time on the beach and nice hotel to break out but Bali is basically a dirty s_hole full of drunks, touts, crooks, scammers, crazy motocy riders, prostitutes, drugs and booze ( despite the death penalty on drugs) and the Indos love the Aussies so much they bombed our embassy. Maybe it has changed as my info is old, don't know.
Won't be going back. Give me Thailand any day.

I don't know much about Lombok. I also want to stay at a hotel on a nice beach front and preferably not as touristy as Kuta. Maybe a week on the beach, and a week or so in Ubud. I want to hike one of volcanoes, bike around the rice paddies, and do yoga. I'd appreciate the recommendation on the fine dining in Ubud. Do you have any recommendations on places to stay in Ubud? There are so many options.

I know a number of people that have went and liked it. A lot of your experience depends on where you go. I did hear that Kuta area especially is just full of Aussies and New Zealanders getting drunk/high and acting like complete idiots.

If you know a few people that "have went and liked it" you should be fine then. You're Canadian, must only be the Aussies and Kiwis acting up.

No offence, if you are some 20 year old hippy chick on a gap year year trying to find yourself, it may be for you. If not avoid.
Sounds like you want Krabi/Ao Nang in Thailand.

I totally disagree with you. My principal and his wife went last year and went to a beautiful area/beach on Bali. Again see my past remark about being where you go in Bali. I have been to Krabi/Ao Nang, so no thanks. Even though it was a beautiful area, I don't want to go to Thailand this year. I go every year and want to see something different. Bali has a lot of culture actually, and a variety of landscapes, temples, beaches, mountains, etc. I've had friends that have went there for their honeymoon. I am excited to go there, I was just asking if anyone has been and if they can give me any recommendations.

Follow your heart, go there and enjoy yourself.
IMHO, the best thing the Balinese could do is get independance from Indo.
