The 3rd Development Battalion and police officers from the Mae Rim police station raided the funeral after a tip-off that there was people gambling after several sets of gambling equipment was seen being smuggled into the event. During the raid, some people managed to escape the police, but officers arrested 29 of those suspected to be gambling. 15 men and 14 women were arrested and three sets of hi-low gambling equipment was seized along with the prize money. www.chiangmaicitylife.com/news/29-gamblers-at-funeral-arrested/

^ I don't usually find anything to do with funerals to be something to laugh at, but this is funny.

Has a similar conotation to the two up games on the day people in Australia remember their comrades who died in past wars.

^ Yes, perhaps the person who died was an avid gambler and they were just doing it in his/her honour.

The 29 would be the ones running the gambling. It happened down here last week. The army carted them off to the barracks. The ones playing rummy were left alone. It's a serious loss to the family paying for the funeral. The army are not well liked. A big shift from just after the coup.

At every funeral that I've ever been to in Thailand (there have been plenty) there has been some form of gambling going on. It;s tradition. Usually it's quite simple, tossing beans onto marked boards, cards etc. Sometimes a Crown and Anchor type game would take place. If the Army persists in stopping this sort of innocuous activity they aren't going to make themselves very popular. Certainly not "Bringing Back Happiness to the People'.

Funny, but when I have been in Thailand during the last two coups the only time I ever think about it being in place is when I read about it on internet forums. Thai friends and family never seem to mention it.

From what I've seen card games are OK, but Hi-Low and Kung Black type games are not. Attendance at funerals is certainly down.
