I remember my father buying this record, thinking it was the nice Tchaikovsky of nut cracker fame. I listened. Wow. Mahler anyone.

Lyrics by David Byrne Days of Fishes Distant Roar Turning to Speak Turning to Hear
Open the Kingdom Open the Kingdom Open the Kingdom Open the Kingdom...
In my way In my way
Being most uncertain And This Remains
Still for better Birds of Voices The Field of Living I am Asking I am Asking I am Asking Returning Love Returning With Love Then it was Written with Love

Fanfare pour le Carrousel Royal by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632- 1687). Listening to this fanfare it almost seems later composers learned a lot from this Frenchman

"Lully died from gangrene, having struck his foot with his long conducting staff during a performance of his Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from surgery."

I bought the original Britten War Requiem when i was seventeen. Still have a copy on CD.So not new to me. That performance was, as i had never had access to it before. It differs little. Was re researching Britten last night. His beloved mother had hoped the line of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms would lead to Britten. In my humble opinion Britten is not in this pantheon, Bartok is,but The War Requiem is a truly magnificent work. Not only the music , but the daring to use Owen's poems to counter the Catholic Mass.
Hung , drawn and quartered in previous centuries.

I really did sing in a performance of this (two) after two weeks of rehearsal.
