Friend of my wife just built a house next to our place, it is a boring rectangle with a boring hip roof but she did not have as much land as us and had to build a house to suit the block. Admittedly she house a bigger house than us, an extra bedroom and bigger kitchen. But she has virtually no backyard where we have about 300 sq mtrs. Maybe it's an Aussie thing but I do like having a backyard to escape to when I am bored inside. Used to drive me crazy when we lived in the condo in the city for five years. Sometimes I would walk around the moat to shake off the cabin fever. Also you need a backyard to erect your bar in privacy - i68.tinypic.com/2qjvqk1.jpgBack half of it, up against the concrete block wall, will be filled in, walls made of concrete blocks. This area, 4mtrs x 3 mtrs, will have a table along the right side wall for my computer stuff. My office iow, music system, flat screen tv, computer monitors, bar fridge. Might even put a bed in there if there's enough room and really settle in. Access door on left side wall. Have a longan tree on either side of it, which is why I thought to build it there, so it is shaded for a lot of the day. The actual bar will be on the front wall. Will buy a big thick slab of timber out at Ban Tawai for the bar-top. Front half will be the same area as the back with dining table and seating as well as a few comfortable bar stools. Will leave it open for now but may fill it in with flyscreen later and put a door either side, the mozzies are bad out here at dusk. BBQ will be under the longan tree on the left. So now the slope goes to the back to the back fence which it looks as if you are next to where does the water go when it rains...you're neighbour?

No, the wall is a meter off the back of the bar. Will put some guttering along the edge of the roof and collect the water in a tank. Don't think the neighbour would mind anyway, it is a longan farm. What are you ? A bloody council building inspector ?

Ours is a boring rectangle house Mick. Reason being is when the guy who does the posts and roof frames came along and said "I can".... I had visions of he couldn't and we'd be forever fixing leaks etc. Turns out the guy was really good. I sat under the bare roof in a full storm and didn't see 1 leak. I think our ceiling to roof ridge cap is 10 feet. True the shape is boring , but not to worry.

Sounds like a nice high pitched roof, you may be able to put a loft up there. That's what I want to do with ours, as soon as I can get up there to have a look around.
Wish I had have been here when they built the place so I could have put some flooring down up there when it was easy to get at. I was in Oz working at the time.

Yeah could fit a loft easily but 2nd storeys always seem to get too hot . I'll start the build thread tonight

I had five years in a condo in CM city before we built this place, had a lot of benefits, like being walking distance to the Wororot Markets, Night Bazaar, and Loi Kroh (although that may not have been such a good thing) But as I said before, the cabin fever got to me.
The guy who owned our last condo died down in BKK and the minute his daughter got her greedy little hands on it she wanted us to buy it. Her original asking price was good and we agreed to buy it, but before she could get up to CM to see us and sort it out she put the price up, twice. So we told her to stick it somewhere and bought our block of land instead, moved into the condo next door until the house was built. Was so nice to move out here where there are still lots of trees and it has not been fully developed yet. And to have some ground to play with, gardens etc.
First thing I am going to do when I get up into our roof is put in some flooring and lights, and then experiment with exhaust fans. Our roof design is a funny one, we have five gable ends, which is good for what I want to do, as each gable end has a timber louvre window built into it. Makes it easy when they are already there, you just buy some exhaust fans and screw them to the inside of the louvre. Some blowing in and some blowing out, depending on the shape of the roof.
Continually replacing the air in that cavity with cooler air means a cooler house.
Good luck with your condo hunting.

Ok house build thread (of sorts) time!
Micks way of having all the pics on a dedicated pic site makes sense ,but the issue is only some pics of later in the build are left on her ipad. Theres plenty more on usb sticks , but my laptop is broken so cant access those sorry.
My wife has all the invoices from day 1 so every last stang can be accounted for. Could add it all up but half the invoices are in Thailand, and the rest in Australia. I'd guesstimate the build to be 1.2 million to date. The only things left to do are furnish and air cons, so lets add maybe 200k on for that stuff.
That's the house , the land needs a tidy up and if we wanted a fence it could be another 150 to 200k I suppose at the top end.

The house is a boring rectangle shape and that's because I doubted the skills of the roofer/roof framer/concrete post guy.
He actually turned out to be very good. A local guy who charged fairly. I preferred price per job over day rates. His roof was water tight. I sat under it before any brick walls went up and not one drop came through in a heavy down pour.

The windows were upgraded to thicker glass. Im still not convinced tinting is the way to go. Ever seen a car with cheap window tint after it bubbles up? Anyway time will tell. All the doors and window frames are aluminium. Sadly bars are fitted to every window and the front door which is a big sliding door. The good bit was there's about 100 designs of bar styles to choose from.
I also fitted the bars on the inside of the windows so no one can remove from the outside. Sad that even in a quiet little village it's needed.
