That will destroy Thai Elite. Cant see the actual benefit in this over the current 800k extension method, unless this is a trial run, with a view to do away with the current retirement extension ie the 800k/65k month method....if that goes there will be a heap less retirees in Thailand thats for certain Irrespective of the method of stay, i do agreed with the medical insurance bit, it should be required for all long stay visa/extensions

I'd need to see more detail.

But even then as an oil worker, if over 50 bung 800k in bank using the current system, still will never do a 90 day report if on 28/28 rotation, only possbile advantage i could see is you dont have to worry about be in country for your renewal every year, only every 5 years...but is that worth 3 million in the bank ? I personally think this is a dry run/precusor to getting rid of the current "retirement visas" completely and replace with this 10 year one, which if you have read TV over enough years this is what some have been bleating for, but they didnt expect the financial requirement, so those same people will be huffing and puffimg, shouting racism, and stamping their little feet

Agree with the insurance thing,too- and I'm a long way of retirement! My flatmate suffered from ruptured appendix back in Thailand and he had no insurance; it ended up costing him a pretty penny and the deducted the bill from his TEFL salary. If you move overseas I would have thought and hoped that taking care of healthcare would be at the top of our list regardless of age- should be anyway. My insurance is average in coverage and cost less than 600 quid for the year- a bargain IMO for peace of mind rather than anything else.

That's for sure.

The financial requirement being locked for a year in Thai baht would be a concern for many, if they allowed foreign owned condos as part of the equation that would make it more appealing.
If I was in the room making these decisions trying to attract the more affluent retiree I'd allow possessions from your home country tax free, VAT allowance for new purchases in the first year, automobile tax credit, recognized ID card and the ability to work up to say 40 hours per month. This requirement of a WP is ridiculous, many of us simply want to volunteer to break the boredom.
As for insurance I'm paying over 13,000 a month now - I went for the best coverage on offer from my home country, I've seen first hand the costs here for long term and end of life care, the add ons are staggering.
Thai Elite will still be an option for those under 50 and I considered it before the big ha sip hit me, for now I'm happy with the 800k option.

Personally, the 3 million Baht doesn't bother me. That's just what was required previously for an Investment visa.
The insurance thing, however, seems rather ludicrous. If someone has 3 million baht or more, they can self-insure.
This is either a a poorly thought out scheme, or a well thought out scheme to line the pockets of insurance companies.
Still, it would be nice not to have to sit in Immigration for interminable hours every year.

I’ll post a picture of the Visa stamp next spring. If I can extend my Thai insurance policy another few months it shouldn’t be a problem to acquire. Right now my Thai insurance policy runs from the first of the year to the end of the year. Just renewed it. It’ll be nice not having to get the paper work in [Medical certificate (3 weeks to get), no criminal record from state (3 to 4 weeks to get), etc.] every damn year and worrying about my passport being in someone else hands (US postal service and Thai Embassy) or being sent back to me (when I might have another trip planned out of the country) in a timely manner. Only one problem,........ thaiembdc.org/consular-services/non-immigrant-visas/non-immigrant-category-o/

One thing to note. They are talking about visas here not extensions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no jusrisdiction over Immigration (extensions)
