Supersonic is coming back. Will the airlines buy it?An upstart jet maker faces a daunting array of challenges — many of the same ones that killed the Concorde, writes Justin Bachman in Dallas Ask a harried air traveller about the basics of modern flight, and you'll probably elicit surprise when they discover commercial aeroplanes fly only as fast as they did in the 1950s. Given the range of aerospace advances in the past half-century, plus the technological leaps in almost every other area of human endeavour, it seems reasonable to ask: Why can't we fly faster? That's the question driving a start-up called Boom Technology, which says it's time to bring supersonic jet travel into the mainstream -- in a modern way. The company is pursuing speed with an audacious idea: a 45-seat aircraft that cruises at Mach 2.2 (1,451 miles per hour), faster than the defunct Concorde and certainly faster than the standard 550 mph, with fares no more expensive than a current business-class round trip, which ranges between $5,000 and $10,000. more... www.bangkokpost.com/business/world/1152585/supersonic-is-coming-back-will-the-airlines-buy-it-

When I was a kid, I lived in Dallas, and the Concorde would come flying over every so often. It shook the house, the noise was beyond belief.

I've wondered for a while when this would make a comeback. As the article says air travel hasn't really got any quicker for people in the last few decades.
At some point someone will find a way for it to be done more cost effectively via some enhanced technology. Not sure whether these guys or not.
Low oil prices have got to help if using traditional fuel. I wonder if they've thought how they'd be if the oil price went back to $150+ though.
I think it's going to happen. Just a question of when. Does strike me as more of a niche market for now though until someone finds a much cheaper replacement fuel in particular
