Like all countries there are frustrations
Somchaism is the only thing that really p**ses me off, and the retarded driving
There is one other topic, which is totally off limits as well, but other than that life isn't bad.

HK sucks . The price of food and accommodation has gone through the roof in the past 10 years . Very hard to find a good deal these days.

Hip,me old son, take from someone who has worked and lived in somewhere in the order of 23 countries in his life, there is very little to bitch about living in Thailand trust me, there is good and there is bad, but the good far outweighs the bad Now if your going to be a whinging bitch please take this subject to TV who i am sure will tell you what you want to hear That's a lot of countries. Which was your favourite? Each of the countries had their pros /cons i dont regret staying in any , but there are some i wouldnt got back too.. But my overall favourite is South Africa, very specifically Cape Town, and it so saddening and frustrating to see what those fkers in the ANC are doing to that country

Thailand is looking pretty good from this end- had the pool to myself for most of the day. Dinner at the Intercontinental was good Got a whole new wardrobe of clothes for under 2000 baht from Big C, hung with friends, slept in and good some books for Jomtien in a couple of weeks. Do I miss living in Thailand? Almost everyday! Do I miss working there? Not at the moment I do have a soft spot for the place; arrived 7 years ago with very little direction in my life and figured I would just TEFL for a term or so and go back to blighty. Ended up loving the job more than I thought would be possible and now happily call Thailand 'home'. For the most I have found Thai people to be welcoming and friendly and the pace of life out in Rangsit is probably what I miss the most.

Since I started dealing with Southeners, Muslims and Chinese, my exposure to Somchaism has been well reduced, to reduce it even further, best if the boss is a woman. All the above have a work ethic, no excuses, aint prone to hammock swinging, show up on time as promised, and do a fair days work for a fair days pay. A further way of reducing Somchaism, NEVER repeat NEVER employ family rice farmers who suddenely reinvent themselves as house builders, .

"best if the boss is a woman." I have mostly worked for a woman boss. Surprised rgs stated same. No macho nonsense, just let's get this sorted. In schools UK, it is normal, equality has long been established. It is not equality of sex, but of person. The best person for the job. You no longer box people around to get your way, we have progressed I hope. I look at cartoons, see Bangkok Post, imported. Men and men and macho, do this or fired. Check it out. All male, male , male. Disagree, then I will box your f ing head in.

I agreed rg, nearly every one of our suppliers are ladies and they are a pleasure to deal with. As soon as a man is involved things go pear shaped. (we run a website since 2006 selling Thai handicrafts, wood products, fabrics etc.) My wife's brother is staying with us at the moment, building the house next door to us. We got him a job with the builder who built our house and now he is doing the one beside us. He's a nice guy, very quiet and a typical Surin rice farmer who has reinvented himself as a house builder. Actually the men and women who are building this house work very hard but I have no idea how reliable they are as in turning up for work every day. (they have twice had two days off so far for funerals, but that is to be expected, it is their way) I have been meaning to find out what they do for those two days, is it like an Irish wake ? I cringe when I watch them building things here, after building my own house in Australia literally from the ground up on my own and being very fussy about it. Even the building inspector who was quite picky usually told me I had over-engineered it.

@ rgs, I have found the best way to reduce the "Somchaism" is to try and avoid it, as in doing what you advised regarding not employing family rice farmers etc.
We had trouble with the clutch in our Isuzu pickup, on Friday, and wife wanted to take it to local Somchai run backyard workshop/chopshop to have it repaired (because we needed the car the next day to drive to Mai Sai) I said no way known are those tossers touching my beloved Isuzu, it has to go to the Isuzu dealership. They do good work at a fair price and use quality parts.

Hey Pat. Just got back from Canada on Friday night and on Friday morning my wife tells me she has Friday and Monday off from work and that we should go to Patterz.
She also insists that we should stay somewhere "cheap" and "different".
Unfortunately I listened to her and we stayed at D'Varee on Jomtien.
What a mistake.
The room itself is ok, but that breakfast buffet is full of Chinese bus tours and very unsanitary. I actually developed a stomach flu. Worst coffee ever.

We are off to Pattaya for the weekend but I insisted we stay at the Amari. I'm not usually fussy about hotels but in that city of sin you need a tranquil escape.

Yes... Amari is a good choice. Holiday inn beside it is even better.
As for value, I am quite happy with Woodlans.
I think I'll avoid jomtien from now on.

I found Thailand OK , and I think my family did too. Immigration was a bit of a hassle, especially when my wife had to sort it out. A decent expat lifestyle and education were not cheap, the tax was the highest I've had to cope with for many years.
There is possibly too much opportunity to succumb to temptation, but a stronger man than you or I might have resisted. Although Thailand itself does not necessarily attract the most ambitious high-fliers, some of my most respected colleagues are working there now; so I don't think Thailand sucks.
My difficulties there were entirely of my own making.
