Finally got my old Kasuga acoustic guitar back yesterday. I had left it with my mate from Devon who lives near Chiang Rai, about seven years ago.
Don't know what happened to the electronic tuner I used to have, it plugs into the jack on the guitar, which has a good pick-up fitted. (I bought this guitar second-hand of a guy in Perth in 1983)
Had a look on the internet for some software for tuning guitars, found one which I downloaded called "Pitch Perfect Musical Instrument Tuner".
You use the microphone built into laptop. Didn't work, and I found by plugging your earphones into the microphone jack on the laptop they become microphones. It actually works, but don't ask me how.
Placed the two ear buds just inside the sound box beside the strings and when you play a particular string the software picks up which string it is and displays the note it is playing, you just adjust it to the right level.
I was showing my 3yo son how it works and even he said it sounded better than before. Perhaps, unlike me, he has a good ear for music.
Is going to take me ages to get my fingers back into shape, they are stinging at the moment.

I had a Fender 12 string back in the seventies, beautiful guitar to play. We had a party one night and some guys we knew who were in a band came over. Big Al the lead guitarist tuned my Fender in "Open E", that thing never sounded so good.

Thanks for that, I am Googling guitar tuning at the moment, have about 15,000 tabs open. It really is quite interesting.
A very good guitar player was showing how to play something in tablature form one time and he said the reason it is hard to sound exactly like people like Neil Young etc is because they tune their guitars in certains ways to achieve that sound, depending on the song.

You can tune your guitar the same way as Neil Young. What you can't do is use his fingers - that's why it's hard to sound like him.

Get a Gibson and make some real noise.

Clapton used to play some amazing guitar, before he got lazy and swapped his Gibson for a Fender, never sounded the same after that. The notes etc was there, the soul wasnt.

Folk guitarists like Martin Carthy and folk blues like Bert Jansch use open tuning .
]My dad taught me the basics of this song when I was a lad.

^^^ correct, its all about the tone. The hippy Floyd lovers dont get it, they still get hard ons for Comfortably Numb (please so effin boring). Here we go, check out that sound. Not enough, (no gay boy sex here), .
