I am not decrying remembrance, far from it. To state RIP to one you never knew is abhorrent to me. If you knew the person , then you have the memory. That applies to all you knew, through fact or fiction. RIP, who ever did? So it is abhorent to expess to someone who has had a berevemement the wish that the stiff RIP.Better all round than the new US speak of "Sorry for your loss." How do they know whether the person you are saying that to hated the corpes' guts. A platitude, "sorry for your loss". Either you are or you are not. Careful the bleth will incur the hitler no point in debating further, act. RIP hitler, stalin, lenin mao, oh come on add to the endless list.

OMG, posting that picture of RIPS prompted me to remember that I need to stock up again, so I tried a search for 'Vapour House, Seacon' (to check for new syock items) and it's being reported on foursquare that the shop has now closed down. It was a brilliant shop and one where I would regularly frequent. Where am I going to get my stock of RIPS and RAW cone tips from in future? A real case of R.I.P.

My point is that this has nothing to do with religion, heaven or hell. A gravestone is much the same as a canotaph, it is a marker laid as a remberance to a life and should therefore be free of disturbance or desecration. As for caterpillars, we cull these evil little monsters to prevent them from taking over the world. They have already learned the art of shapeshifting, just think what they can do with a further 20,000 years of evolution under their belts (if they wear belts by then). Can you just imagine the chaos that a 40' long caterpillar with razor sharp tusks and opposable thumbs could cause? As far as I'm concerned, catapillars belong in insect hell, if only to offer a better chance to the survival of my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandchildren's children. 40' you said ?

R.I.P has nothing to do with resting in peace, it is from the Latin phrase ' requiescat in pace', which translates to 'May he/she lay in peace', which refers to the persons grave not being desicrated or disturbed. Rest in Peace is just what English speakers say to make it fit. I beg to differ. The Latin verb requiescere, of which requiescat is the third person singular active subjunctive present, does not mean lay (verb) in English, nor does it mean lie (verb) in the sense of being in a recumbent position, which you probably intended. Requiescere really means to rest, to repose. It is not an exhortation to the living to leave the buried body undisturbed. To express a passive action like that, the passive subjunctive present would be used. Requiescere is composed of the prefix "re", indicating repetition or recurrence, and the verb "quiescere", from which the English verb quieten and the adjective quiet are derived. Requiescat in pace really is a wish that the dead person, or its soul, may rest in peace, not that the dead body may be left lying in the grave without being disturbed or the grave being desecrated. The often-quoted Bible text about working for six days and resting on the seventh is an example ( Exodus 20:11) Quod erat demonstandum.

...and the morale of the story is: beware of an Italian Mango with a Latin signature lurking in the background Te absolvo, Tigris Fornicantes.
