I've travelled the Orient Express, Pullman specials also the U K Royal Train protection duty a time or ten.
I have travelled many a mile through Europe, Asia, India and the Americas' by train which in my view are the most civilised form of land transport available to man.
Now the Japanese have come up with the ultimate in locomotive power and passenger rolling stock and introduced a concept of rail travel that exceeds my and many other train lovers dreams See the link below.

It is certainly luxurious. What about the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin SP? I loved it. Have done the sleeper from Bangkok to Nong khai and return-interesting.

Very nice, and for 2k might be worth putting on my bucket list. Some of my most memorable train journeys were the Trans Mongolia/ Siberian which I dragged out for over a month; Wadi Halfa to Khartoum after taking the boat from Aswan; the shinkansen Tokyo to Kyoto, Greymouth to Christchurch; can't think of others off the top of my head. We rarely travel by train in Thailand any more since the development of domestic air travel. Unfortunately I have very few photos but will look up some generic youtube clips to post.

I was picturing India too, must be very scenic on the roof, beer or a spliff will do, I don't inhale though

I envy oldie's train trips, still want to do the Trans Siberian one, from Moscow to Vladivostok.
Longest one I have done is from Port Augusta to Perth although I did the length of Vietnam about three times altogether in separate legs. The trip up to Sapa was good as was idling through the villages and rice farms in central Vietnam.
Funny thing is we all seem to collect stories from train trips, should put them together in one thread.

Caught the train to Melbourne once. Hated it. 10 hours of crap when flying is done in 55 minutes.

Alcohol is available for guests on ''The Royal''' However there is not a bar per se.
As a digression the ''Royal'' is one of the two trains that always has green signal aspects all the way to its destination either as an empty stock train movement or with passengers aboard. The other train being the bullion train which was and I think still is a daily service.
In the event of a mishap both trains can and would be diverted through the system which even now is very interchangeable regarding routing paths if needs be, no red aspects in sight but the possibility of amber warning aspects would slow progress down
