Great white shark cull debate sparked after tragic death of teenage surfer CALLS for a mass killing of great white sharks has put Australian politicians at loggerheads in the wake of the tragic death of a teenage surfer. Putting human life first is vital to stop the kind of horrific strike that killed the 17 year old surfer earlier this week, says Australia’s environment minister. Shark exclusion nets, drumline traps and culling are being heralded as the “see fit” tactics needed to thwart a rise in attacks by the species that gave rise to the legend of Jaws. Laeticia Brouwer became the third victim in a year to be killed by sharks off the beaches of Western Australia earlier this week. www.express.co.uk/news/nature/793871/Great-White-Shark-teenage-surfer-death

While I have great sympathy for the victim and her family and friends I feel the wrong reactions are being provoked. Perhaps starting on home ground to lessen needless deaths might be a good idea see below, How many people a year are killed by drivers of assorted motor vehicles?Too many you say. Right lets cull the drivers to ease if not actually solve the problem. Well going by the paranoid reaction Aand proposals to Great Whites we should certainly commence and follow an aggressive cull the drivers campaign. Let's remember as humans we are in the Great Whites domain as well as many other animal wildlife domains not the other way round. In fact humans are only a very recent addition to animal life on this planet, we're the problem not the other creatures that are and already were here. Below a link which certainly showed poetic justice as regards a wanton killer, sad though that two more creatures whose domain had been invaded had to be slaughtered though to prove a point. www.rt.com/viral/385338-missing-hunter-eaten-by-crocodiles

My condolences to family of the poor girl who was killed by the shark. Yes, I agree sp, every time someone is killed by wildlife in the world there are cries to either cull the guilty creature or wipe them out. If every demand was met there would not be an animal left on the planet, except for the ones who are hellbent on destroying it. If someone enters your home you have a civil right to defend your home, and as far as the sharks go, they just think a swimmer is part of the food chain. Humans slaughter millions of animals every year but when the shoe is on the other foot the rules change. I worked on prawn trawlers and tuna boats for several years off the eastern and northern coasts of Australia, and in PNG. I made a silent agreement with the sharks a long time ago, I'll stay out of your house if you stay out of mine. Only ever went over the side once, in shark infested waters off Moreton Island in QLD. Threw the cod-end over the stern and went with it. The crew said I was like a cat climbing a tree with a big dog up it's arse the way I climbed up that net to get out of the water.

In Cape Town the white attacks are increasing because of the dumb as sh#t tourists who want to get a selfie with Jaws, so the tour operators running the boats have been chumming big time to bring the whites closer to shore, as dont want to get the punter sea sick do we ? and the heroic tourists gets their selfies... The whites are a protected species in SA, and believe now the powers that be have threatened to fine / strip the license of any tour operator they find chumming for Whites so a dip shit can take a piccy

Back in the early seventies my Dad skippered a prawn trawler for a while in northern NSW, at a place called Brunswick Heads. The trawlers used to sort prawns and push the trash over the side as they steamed up the Brunswick River when they were heading back to port in the mornings. Bloody big sharks were following them up the river so they were banned from doing it. Local council was worried about a tourist or two being eaten and give the town a bad name, a-la "Jaws" movie.
The tourist operators you mentioned would not care less about anything except making money. Same same in Oz.

How many of you would swim in shark infested waters? Last year,.....
But I don’t think I would knowingly enter the water with great whites

I don't care how big and tough those sharks are but for some reason dolphins are not the least bit scared of them and actually bully sharks. Many a time I have been sorting prawns at the tray, pushing all the "trash" over the side and these bloody big sharks are following the boat feeding on the stuff. If something that a dolphin likes, like a "grinner" fish goes over the side they shoot in and push the sharks out the way, quite aggressively. Sometimes the sharks are that thick in the water you can't count them. Used to hang on like I had cat's claws ! (I read somewhere that dolphins are gay sharks !)

When I lived in New Guinea we used to hire a boat and go out to the outer reefs to skin dive and though there were sharks about sometimes only one person in living memory had been eaten in PM HARBOUR and on the way out and back used often to trail a rope and hang on and get pulled along by the rope. One day I was doing this and suddenly thought of how we caught fish and sharks by trailing bait behind a boat. they recokon I swam so fast I passed the boat in the rush to get back on board.
