Penicillin changed everything. Infections that had previously killed were suddenly quickly curable. Yet as Maryn McKenna shares in this sobering talk, we've squandered the advantages afforded us by that and later antibiotics. Drug-resistant bacteria mean we're entering a post-antibiotic world — and it won't be pretty. There are, however, things we can do ... if we start right now.

Did you know that they used to deliberately infect people with malaria as a cure for syphilis.
I don't pop pills, never have done, my thinking is that your body builds up a resistance to anything you stick in it that it hasn't created itself. I will not take a pain-killer for the slightest ache when I could just live through it in the hope that when I am in serious need of a pain-killer, it will actually work on me.
When it comes to antibiotics, it appears that the rest of the world has conspired against me.
Every visit to a Thai hospital, they all walk out with a big bag of medicine, most of which has absolutely nothing to do with the condition they went in with, it actually does make me angry, their lack of knowledge or just downright apathy is screwing with my life.

I'm hyper sensitive to most medication, antibiotics horrible stuff, plays up with my stomach and end up with thrush, knock on wood I have good health and keep fit so rarely need anything more than cold meds.
I'm right into the TCM stuff, prevention is always better than a cure.

One extremely sad thing is that antiB's are abused so badly these days. Many people stop taking them when symptoms clear up and the bacteria causing the symptoms is not yet killed off. Another item that really p**ses me off is the marketing of fake med's. The people who manufacture and market the fakes should be imprisoned for murder...or simply shot.
Oddly enough there is a certain strain of malaria in NW Cambodia and the only treatment for it is doxycycline aka Vibramycin. Still unsure exactly how it kills off the parasite but educated guesses points to the parasites reproductive cycle and the breaking down of cell structures within said cycle. Or so a CDC research person once told me.
Scary stuff abounds with bacteria these days which are not only resistant to antiB's we have but literally eat the antiB's for snacks. Google "Antibiotic resistant bacteria" for info if you so desire.
Mind you there is hope out there..somewhere in deepest darkest Africa... no kidding. A new natural antiB, one that no bacteria has a resistance to may have been found in the soil of a certain place in a certain African nation. Google for more info any way you want on this as it is a hard find. Plus I understand why further info may be kept off the web for heaps of reasons....$$$$$$ being just one.
Nowadays there's all this antiB stuff everywhere you look...bath soaps, laundry soaps, dish soaps, air fresheners etc...etc....the list is quite endless. And all this antiB stuff doesn't come with a doctors warning. Many doctors agree that the antiB craze these days will make the human race prone to infections that will easily kill us off since our bodies may eventually loose the ability to fight off a simple infection...say one that is very localised...like from a tiny spliter in a finger. That's scary eh?
We need a little dirt in our lives...for our health. And we need to curb or stop the planets population growth...or do we?
"We are a plague on the Earth, it's coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now." ____David Attenborough

Every visit to a Thai hospital, they all walk out with a big bag of medicine, most of which has absolutely nothing to do with the condition they went in with, it actually does make me angry, their lack of knowledge or just downright apathy is screwing with my life. I believe that the reasons for Thai hospitals dishing out too many meds is twofold. Firstly it is income, the more meds that they sell to you at inflated prices means more profits, and let's face one fact here, Thai hospitals are businesses and should not be mistaken for anything else. The fact that Thais will not question anyone in authority means that they could load up the patient's bill with as many meds as they like without any repercussions. My son recently spent 2 nights in hospital and the bill was Baht 15,000 per night (no operation involved just tests and observation), if it wasn't for the insurance covering most of the bill I would have questioned the breakdown of this exorbitant bill. Secondly it is what is expected by Thai patients. If they don't come out of the hospital clutching a bag full of different coloured meds then they don't think that the Doctor was thorough enough. Every time that I go to my usual hospital I am given Paracetamol with my bag of goodies, despite that fact that I inform the Doctor that I will not need any Paracetamol this time, as I still have some from my last visit. I use my Thai social card, so the hospital likes to load me up with meds which I don't pay for directly but they can claim for from the Thai hospital social scheme. Profit is what it is all about.
