When your elected officials are careful with your tax payments "Miami’s mayor backed MiamiCoin crypto—then its price dropped 95% On Feb. 2, the city of Miami cashed out its cryptocurrency MiamiCoin for the first time, depositing $5.25 million into city coffers. Miami mayor Francis Suarez hailed it as a “historic moment” and predicted the cryptocurrency could one day even replace municipal taxes as the government’s primary source of funding. MiamiCoin’s creator, an organization called CityCoins, has been no less enthusiastic, portraying the coin as a financial experiment that will empower citizens with a “community-driven revenue stream” while spurring new digital city services ... But only Miami’s mayor has thrown his full endorsement behind a CityCoin-branded cryptocurrency so far. After promoting MiamiCoin to residents and investors since its launch in August, the city of Miami received millions of dollars through its agreement with CityCoins. Over the last nine months, however, MiamiCoin has lost nearly all of its value, falling about 95% from its September peak to just $0.0032 as of May 13. Its rapid descent has burned investors on the way down, muting the dreams of Miami’s city leaders, and possibly raising red flags for regulators now investigating cryptocurrency transactions." qz.com/2165639/miamis-mayor-backed-miamicoin-then-its-price-dropped-95-percent/

Interesting contrast "UK Minister Wants Nation to Be a Crypto Hub, Minus the Criminals Minister sounds caution on money laundering, sanction evasion UK bars retail investors from trading crypto derivatives" www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-06-15/uk-minister-wants-nation-to-be-a-crypto-hub-minus-the-criminals"Bill Gates says crypto and NFTs are a sham Don't count Bill Gates among the fans of cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Those digital asset trends are "100% based on greater fool theory," the Microsoft co-founder said Tuesday at a TechCrunch conference, referencing the notion that investors can make money on worthless or overvalued assets as long as people are willing to bid them higher. Gates added that he's "not long or short" crypto. And he mocked Bored Apes NFTs, joking that "expensive digital images of monkeys" will "improve the world immensely." Instead, Gates said he prefers old fashioned investing." edition.cnn.com/2022/06/15/tech/bill-gates-crypto-nfts-comments/index.html

Well he would, wouldn't he. I don't disagree on NFTs and a lot of crypto is just a ponzi scheme but not all. I definitely believe that decentralized finance is a good thing, if only they could get it working properly, but blocking whales as it develops can prove difficult. We earn so little interest from parking our money with banks, but they are able to earn so much more from our savings. I think they can loan out an amount equivalent to 9 or 10 times deposits held by them. Decentralized Finance will do away with this money grubbing middleman so we can get better returns on our savings. However, it is still very much in its infancy, and it coould take many years before it becomes more mainstream, by which time I'll be dead anyway.

hypothetical but people with lots of 'influence' (governments?) could have fun with blockchain. "Cryptocurrency tech is vulnerable to tampering, a DARPA analysis finds Whether prices are up or down, for many investors in cryptocurrency, the real appeal is that there's nobody in charge. As the crowd chanted at the recent Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami, it's all about "Freedom!" By design, the system is meant to be from interference by banks, companies and governments. But a new report finds that the decentralized system might not be working as well as many crypto enthusiasts assume. The report was commissioned by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, and the work was done by the software security research company Trail of Bits." www.npr.org/2022/06/21/1105815143/cryptocurrency-bitcoin-blockchain-security-tampering-darpa

Not surprised with the slashing of headcount but really surprised the headcount they had could be justified. "European Crypto Exchange Bitpanda Cuts Staff by Hundreds Bitpanda announced it is reducing its employee count to 730, down from about 1,000. Austria-based crypto trading platform Bitpanda is slashing its headcount to ensure sustainability, the company said in a Friday blog post. Bitpanda’s founders said the firm needs to let employees go as it scales down due to market conditions. The company said it is aiming for a target headcount of 730. It has just over 1,000 employees, according to LinkedIn. “We reached a point where more people joining didn’t make us more effective, but created coordination overheads instead, particularly in this new market reality,” Bitpanda wrote. “Looking back now, we realise that our hiring speed was not sustainable. That was a mistake.”" www.coindesk.com/business/2022/06/24/european-crypto-exchange-bitpanda-cuts-staff-by-hundreds/"Coinbase Lays Off Around 1,100 Employees The exchange is reducing its workforce by roughly 18%. CEO Brian Armstrong admits the company "grew too quickly."" www.coindesk.com/business/2022/06/14/coinbase-will-layoff-around-1100-employees/
