Iceland qualify; Wales left frustrated by Israel; Netherlands slump

Iceland became the smallest nation to qualify for the finals of the European Championship thanks to a point from a goalless draw with Kazakhstan.

The Nordic island nation boasts an estimated population of around 329,100 people, and 23 of their number will be selected to compete at Euro 2016 in France next summer.

Six wins from their previous seven games proved to be a solid foundation and a further Group A point, secured against Kazakhstan in Reykjavik, got Iceland over the line.

Meanwhile, Wales must wait to join the party at Euro 2016 next summer.

Chris Coleman's side knew three points against Israel in Cardiff would see them qualify for a major tournament for the first time since the 1958 World Cup.

But despite dominating throughout they were held to a 0-0 draw by stubborn opponents who remain in the hunt for qualification in Group B but showed no attacking intent at all.

They missed an early chance to take the lead when Aaron Ramsey headed over from close range after Andy King's shot, following a pass by defender Jazz Richards, had been stopped by Ofir Martziano.

Shortly before the hour mark, Gareth Bale fired over from a free-kick awarded for a push marginally outside the penalty area, and the home side should have had a penalty when Bale's inswinging cross hit defender Eitan Tibi on the arm -- but the referee waved away strong appeals.

Substitute Simon Church thought he had won it in injury time, but he was offside when heading home Bale's flick-on.

Netherlands' hopes are hanging by a thread after they slumped to a 3-0 defeat in Turkey.

Danny Blind's side got off to the worst possible start when, with less than 10 minutes on the clock, they were behind thanks to Oguzhan Ozyakup's finish.

They missed a great chance to equalise when Memphis Depay and Robin van Persie set up Wesley Sneijder, who fired his effort too close to the goalkeeper.

And they were made to pay when Arda Turan fired home at the near post, with goalkeeper Jesper Cillessen unconvincing. Georginio Wijnaldum missed a chance to pull one back before the home side added a late third when Burak Yilmaz struck.

David Limbersky and Vladimir Darida picked the perfect time to score their maiden international goals to help the visitors.

And by a strange coincidence first-half goals at almost identical times for the Turks secured the Czech's passage to France with two matches to spare as they can no longer be caught by third-placed Turkey or the Netherlands.

Eden Hazard delayed Wales' hopes of qualification with an 84th-minute strike that gave Belgium a 1-0 victory against Cyprus.

Belgium laboured throughout, but eventually overcame Cyprus to keep both qualification slots open in Group B.

Anything other than three points for the Europeans would have guaranteed leaders Wales passage through to the Euro 2016 finals and for a long time the Cypriots looked like doing Chris Coleman's men a huge favour.

However, Chelsea's Hazard struck four minutes from time to ensure the outcome of the group will not be decided until the final round of matches next month.

Italy beat Bulgaria 1-0 in Palermo to take over top spot in Group H.

Daniele De Rossi struck in the sixth minute after Veselin Minev fouled Antonio Candreva inside the area.

The veteran Italian midfielder later earned himself a red card 10 minutes after the restart for retaliating after a bad tackle by Ilijan Micanski, who was also sent off.

Bulgaria had chances to equalise but neither side found the net the rest of the way in an entertaining match.

Bosnia-Herzegovina cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over minnows Andorra in their Group B match.

Ermin Bicakcic, Edin Dzeko and Senad Lulic all scored before half-time as Andorra slumped to a 52nd consecutive competitive defeat.

However, Bosnia had Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic sent off for shaping to throw something at an opponent just after the hour mark after being tripped, only for Victor Rodriguez to also be dismissed moments later.

Besic's red card means he will miss next month's visit of Group B leaders Wales.

Azerbaijan's two-goal hero Rahid Amirguliev struck an 80th-minute equaliser to deny Malta their first victory in a 2-2 Euro 2016 qualifying Group H draw in Ta' Quali.

The 26-year-old midfielder put the visitors ahead in the 36th minute, but the home side, who had failed to score in their previous five competitive games, hit back in the second half.

Michael Mifsud equalised 10 minutes after the re-start before Alfred Effiong put Malta ahead in the 71st minute.

Amirguliev halted the home celebrations when he scored 10 minutes from time to earn his team a point.

Jo Inge Berget produced a match-winning performance for Norway, who went top of Euro 2016 qualifying Group H with a 2-0 home win over Croatia.

Both goals came in the second half, as former Celtic man Berget scored on 51 minutes and then prodded home off Croatian Vedran Corluka.
