When you know, in your heart of hearts ... it's wrong ... but you also know that, your opinion on the matter means shite and, to be honest, it's really none of your damm business.
IOW - You care, but can't change things.
Where I live, it's an extended family, 3 generations under one roof.
The person in question is my 'Nephew', he's 12. Heck of a nice kid, good heart, well raised by his Mother and the extended Family. Considerate of others. To look at him he would pass for 15 or 16 ... but he's 12. Starts 'High School' this year, but, till then, he's in junior.
His Birthday is soon and his Grandmother and Mother have hatched a plot to buy him a 'Scooter' ... not a serious motorbike mind you, just something smaller for the local Soi's.
When told of the plan, I voiced my protests, siting all the usual arguments revolving around a 12 year old being in charge of a 'Scooter'.
So, when the time came to collect the 'Scooter', they knew not to ask me to drive them. Nor his Grandfather, who just shakes his head at the idea.
His mum, she doesn't work, relies on a stipend from her Thai boyfriend. Probably doesn't have BHT 1,000 to rub together, so my assumption is that Grandma has bought the bike.
Still his mum, she's equally nice (as her son), real pleasant like, a great sister to my partner, I genuinely like her. Has done a good job of raising her son without a Father these past 5 or 6 years.
But I reckon she's made a mistake with this decision.
Today was the pick-up day. They hired a van, BHT 7,000 in hand for the purchase and collected the 'Scooter'.
Scooter my arse ... it's one of those Vespa style motorbikes, well capable of 80 kph+
It doesn't take a great imagination to think what a 12 year old will do with a motorbike.
I don't want to think the worse, but I fear the worse.
Heck, I hope he proves me wrong.
I know it's wrong, but I also know it's just none of my business.
Any similar experiences?

Seems to me to be a rite of passage for young Thais.
And their first accident is part of the package.
Anyway - do something useful and give him some lessons - and buy him a decent helmet

Its not that young 12yo. It might seem it if you never grew up with bikes but I remember my cousin had a pee wee 50 when we would have been 8yo kind of thing. Then before high school we all had kx80's and those things flew. Look at this way, couple years and he'll be driving cars.

How people raise their kids compared to how you'd raise them has differences the world over.
The gaps seem bigger sometimes in Thailand because of cultural differences, education etc. So yes this type of thing seems to crop up a lot.
You've done what you should. Voiced your concern when asked.
Buying him a helmet sounds a great idea, and some education as to why he should use it practically, as well as people care about him and what everyone / family would feel like if he had an accident. Good chance he won't use it, but...

Its not wrong, its not right, it just is. Agreed, no doubt. His Thai Grandfather, who is the Alpha Male here and under who's roof the kids sleeps under said no ... bit it's his grandson. On this rgs, we both agree ... it just is

I hope the accident when it happens is minor and he is a quick learner.
