The government justified the controversial move on grounds of national security, citing concerns about terrorism. The new, seemingly intrusive request is likely to face stiff resistance from Thailand’s large expatriate community, which had previously faced leaks of their personal information. Reporting on internal immigration documents that it acquired, Khaosod English said that forms with the aforementioned fields would apply to visa extensions and the routine 90-day reports needed for legal stay in Thailand. In addition to bank account numbers, the form asks foreigners about the social media they use and the vehicles they drive as well as places they frequent – “such as club, restaurant, shop, hospital and other places.” While the form seems to imply that the information is mandatory, the government said otherwise. “We won’t force them to fill it out,” said Chatchawan Wachirapaneekhun, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau’s crime suppression unit, according to Khaosod English. “We won’t bother with their social media – if they aren’t doing anything wrong.” His comments are likely to add to a confusing situation. Thailand’s expats might wonder why the new fields were included in the first place. So if they're not forcing anyone, why bother even coming out with this story? Ah...but here is the the kicker if the story is to be believed, when doing your 90 day report if one refused to fill in the forms they will not accept your 90 day report... so if this is true then your buggered... |

I wonder if as Dutchman I'm allowed to do my 90-day reporting in lycra carrying a folded bike over my shoulder? Mind you, I'm not in the mood to buy either  |

Long ago when I joined the army I was told never to volunteer for anything.
It wss soon made clear that not volunteering would mean a 60 mile run in full pack with rifle above the head.
I have been suspicicious of it when people say something is voluntary ever since.

I wonder if as Dutchman I'm allowed to do my 90-day reporting in lycra carrying a folded bike over my shoulder? Mind you, I'm not in the mood to buy either how about attending immigration in your finest wooden clogs with an Edam under each arm ? That could be construed as 'attempt to bribe'. Yep that's certainly confusing. They'll formally ask foreigners for their social media use, but they won't bother forcing people to fill it out and won't bother with the social media ?? I wonder how much is down to the reporting by Asia Correspondent/ Khao Sod though. They already collect people's bank details for visa extensions for many people. Have to do my extension of stay towards the end of this month. Hope it won't be complicated further by these new things, but not holding my breath. There's already enough vague points in the whole process which are at the discretion and interpretation of the official you get on the day, without adding more. |

I do my extension of stay based on marriage and money in the bank account. That cuts out anything to do with my employer (they only provide info for my work permit and I don't need for visa extension based on marriage) and cuts out anything to do with the embassy. I figure the fewer parties involved the better. Let us know how you go on. Will probably go end of next week As for 90 days I do that online now. Maybe next time I can post links to my FB page and pages of the restauarnts bars etc I go to for them  I wonder if BigMango counts as social media |
