They should make it a Chinese international flight only airport. Giant demand from that country.

Enough space for another runway, the road down from the 36, the 331 is being widened into a dual carriageway as well

If they built a Chinese only terminal they could offer pre-vetted visa on arrival so that they can disembark and bypass immigration. Dublin airport does it for US flights. They could use the current terminal for domestic flights and non- Chinese international.

I wonder if the Middle East airlines would run a route into U-Tapao.
This is a cracking idea by the government.

The dublin preprocessed immigration is processed in Dublin (and Shannon) by US Immigration staff and by US Customs staff and TSAHomeland Security Staff. I presume you would want to do the same so how many airports in China would you position Thai Immigration staff and Thai Customs staff so this could be done.

Aren't they also planning a third runway for Suvarnabhumi?
(Actually, I use the term "planning" loosely. Suvarnabhumi was supposed to replace Don Mueang. Then they realised they'd totally miscalculated and reopened the old airport. And now they have discovered they need another terminal building and runway at Suvarnabhumi. Looks like incompetence on a massive scale - either that or a new terminal and runway provide massive opportunities for backhanders. Not sure which. Probably both.)

A third runway is under construction. THe airport is close to capacity for the hours it is open now...I personally do not believe in curfews forInternational Airports as the cost they add to aviation is considerable not to to mention the one third more flights that could be handled daily without them. Terminal facilitie at Suvarnabhumi are close to capacity too and a redesign improvement is needed.

Sowhat would be the cost to Thialand for posting immigration and customs staff at those airports and proving overseas accomodation allowances. As the immigration staff are Police do they have extraterritoriality. Immigration claims now it does not have the staff to cover angkock and the internal International airports in Thailand. this is a few of tthe flights now
THAI AIRASIA FD 301 UTAPAO NANCHANG 10:00 14:25 MON,TUE,THU,SAT
FD 302 NANCHANG UTAPAO 15:10 17:40 MON,TUE,THU,SAT
FD 303 UTAPAO NANNING 10:00 13:15 WED,FRI,SUN
FD 304 NANNING UTAPAO 14:00 15:20 WED,FRI,SUN
FD 450 UTAPAO MACAO 18:35 22:10 MON,TUE,THU,SAT
FD 451 MACAO UTAPAO 22:40 00:25 MON,TUE,THU,SAT
AK 840 KUALA LUMPUR UTAPAO 14:25 15:25 MON,WED,FRI,SUN
AK 841 UTAPAO KUALA LUMPUR 15:55 18:55 MON,WED,FRI,SUN
There are also numerous charter flights from India and Europe.

U Ta Pao has lot of potential in terms of flights it could take.
I would also love to see Trat opened up for more direct / international flights as it would be a big boost for Eastern Thailand

Just like the ''cracking'' runways at swampy no doubt.
All down to the Bag Lady commission agent and her family at Swampy in the day, however the M D of that family business now resides abroad. No doubt though if a new runway is constructed at U Tapao (cracks and all) other commission agents will no doubt be involved.

The UTP side of this is a small part of the total brown envelopes that will be getting handed out, the 331road development project, ie bringing a dual carriage way from the 36 and from Pattaya, and widening the 331, must be very large indeed

What does it matter about the brown envelopes? you'd think that was exclusive to Thailand
It's the way business is done worldwide - even RTolls Royce have been pulled for it
And in an act of stunning stupidity, the British government outlawed UK companies bribing overseas entities to gain contracts
Forkin ludicrious, and typical of nanny state politicians getting involved in things that have nothing to do with them
