The prosecution was seeking a 1-year prison term. The judge handed down two years. It was bad enough when he lost an election last month primarily because he's a Chinese Christian... now this. It's a sign ASEAN's most populous nation is becoming less tolerant. _______________ The outgoing governor of Jakarta has been jailed for two years for blasphemy after judges handed down a sentence that was harsher than expected. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok, was accused of insulting Islam by referring to a verse in the Koran in a campaign speech last year. Mr Purnama, a Christian in Muslim-majority Indonesia, has denied blasphemy and plans to appeal. His case was seen as a test of the country's religious tolerance. www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-39853280

It's a sign ASEAN's most populous nation is becoming less tolerant. It's not the nation that's becoming less tolerant, it's Moslems in that nation becoming less tolerant. That said, they've never been that tolerant. I was in Indonesia during the 1998 riots where Moslems targeted the ethnic Chinese. Those Chinese who could flee the country did. I also remember visiting Labuan Bajo which is roughly 50/50 Christian and Moslem back in the 90's. The Moslems had built a mosque next to a church as a deliberately provocative act. Then, every time there was a church service they turned on their loudspeakers to provide the usual Islamic cacophonous wailing in an attempt to disrupt the service. I don't think anybody ever called Islam "The Religion of Tolerance".

I have a few indonesian friends who are disgusted with this sham trial. The rise of muslim fundamentalists in SEA is quite concerning, and we are seeing more terrorism because of this

Initially Blasphemy was and is a Christian issue, it wasn't an Islamic edict. Read the article and make of it as you wish. In reality, however, if one were to say, even in precolonial days, that Mohammed was a big girl's blouse, one would have to face the consequences, written law or not. Paradoxically, Christianity created blasphemy laws because of its general tolerance of personal expression; the Islamic world didn't need blasphemy laws because of its intolerance of personal expression.

Some people have an unhealthy preoccupation with Islam. Flogging a dead horse comes to mind

That comment seems a bit at odds when one views the Stephen Fry scenario, and the complaint(s) lodged.
Indeed a most peculiar interpretation of religious tolerance or perhaps truthfully it's a splendid example of religious intolerance.
