"I've been poor all my life, I know how to be poor," said a young trainee schoolteacher to me.
What is poverty? a lack of funds?
I reckon it's a lack of choice, and that brings the worst poverty - The Poverty of Hope.
Here lies the problem - Poverty of Hope is an alien concept to just about all of us on this board.
You may have had situations that you thought were hopeless, but most of us can see, and find a way out.
What if you can't?
What if you are a stateless person in Chiang Rai? unable to get residency, a work permit, or any type of legal employment -
Where's the choice?
Where's the hope?
I see people in Facebook groups boasting all the time about how they can live cheap in Thailand. And when the going gets tough, they phone Mummy and get her to fly them out on her credit card.
To live a frugal life through choice is fine.
To compare it to the genuine poverty which scars many is wilful stupidity.

I have family in the UK who live in poverty.
Yet for most of them it is a choice....there are routes out of it but they are too lazy to change their poor lifestyles.
My tolerance is low in these cases.
I knew an Iraqi who arrived in the UK in 1993 and shared a flat with me in London shortly afterwards who was poor as dirt.
He now owns his own home and thriving business...all through his own hard work...18 hrs a day for 20 years.
That to me is what the UK's immigration policy is all about....and should remain to be.

Luck of the draw. Game of life. Such is life. Heartache and pain can happen to the rich as well. Often the happiest moments in life are found in the unlikeliest places.

The biggest problem in making oneself financially independent is the fact that most people are too busy earning a living to make money.
