Even though he's only 3 months old and born in Australia, once he's a Thai citizen , aka Thailand people , he'll be expected to join the army or become a monk I'd expect right?
So what's the scoop?
Even though he'll likely only ever holiday in Thailand, at a certain age will he be grabbed at the airport by immigration and forced to go?
What are the ways he can avoid it all?

I have heard from a thread in the other place that being in higher education gives him a way out. My son too will have to find a way out.

If he is not on the house book they will not draft him, he can be a monk or higher education or if his standard of thai isnt good enough they would most likely excempt him If only ever on holiday, presumably on a Aussie pp they are not going to grab him at the airport At the end of the day, its his choice whether he does or doesnt go

Ive heard if they join like the air cadets in Australia, that would exempt him automatically Soutpeels comment on not being on the house book sounds the best way. Not sure about your son , but my daughter knows minimal Thai, and I can't see my son being any different. Even my 12yo little sister who's half Thai says she's Aussie. No point learning the language.

I'm half Romanian- I just paid $1000 to the quack to diagnose me with a heart defect in Bucharest. Perhaps you could do a similar thing in Thailand?

My son is going on four. I wish the Army would come and pick him up today, but I doubt it would last long and they would be bringing him back saying - "Don't call us, we'll call you" !

The defect a stake through the heart? Allergic to garlic. For our Seb that may be a fate worse than a stake. A steak without garlic.

The school cadets issue is indeed a sound one as it does absolve him or her (cadets can be of all 3 genders here in Thailand) from statutory conscription unless war is declared.
Also if the child has been in the cadet force of another nation there are agreements in place that accept that cadet term from another nation as acceptable exemption from statutory military service here in Thailand. The issue relies I think on the acceptance of Thai military personnel into training courses in other countries, it seems to be some sort of reciprocal agreement.
Our middle boy Bank refused cadet force and recently attended the conscription lottery, his attitude was, if I go I go if not it isn't a problem.
He didn't go, however the recruiting team tried to tempt him with a promise of officer cadet school, at 6.ft tall and excellent English he would have been a prize catch it seems. Bank would have none of it and has returned to his car parts trading business. Eldest boy was exempt due to impaired sight in one eye due to a childhood mishap, youngest his time is to come.

The lad will be entering Thailand as a farang on an ozzy passport, and leaving on an ozzy passport.
Forget all this bar girl talk and shit house lawyer bar stool talk.
If you can afford it, get the lad enrolled into the Thai military as an officer.
